NVIDIA has finally dated its neural renderer. The performance bill has not gone away, it has just been hidden behind frame generation.
DLSS 5 goes live on September 3, and the first game that supports it is NBA 2K27. That is the whole launch line-up: one basketball title. NVIDIA confirmed the date and the details this week, along with the first performance figures it is willing to put its name to.
The headline feature is what NVIDIA calls 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, a model that reworks lighting and material detail in the rendered frame rather than just upscaling it. It runs on Blackwell’s fifth-generation Tensor cores, and that is the hard part of the announcement: DLSS 5 is RTX 50 only, across desktop, laptop and GeForce NOW, with no fallback path for RTX 40 or anything older.
Six months on a diet #
When NVIDIA first showed this thing at GTC in March, it needed two RTX 5090s to run at all. That was the demo, not a product. The company now says the model is roughly five times faster than that March build, with about half the gain arriving by May and a further 2.5x by July, as VideoCardz notes. It now fits on a single card, and NVIDIA says every RTX 50 GPU from the 5060 up qualifies.
That is a genuinely impressive six months of optimisation work. It is also an admission of where the thing started.
The bill is still 50 to 60 percent #
Here is the number nobody is putting in a slide deck: switching DLSS 5 on costs somewhere between 50 and 60 percent of your frame rate before Multi Frame Generation gets involved. NVIDIA’s own NBA 2K27 figures, at 4K with the Ultra preset and ray tracing, land an RTX 5090 around 370 FPS and an RTX 5080 near 233 FPS. Those are big numbers, and MFG is doing an enormous amount of the lifting to produce them.
There is one outside data point worth holding onto. Modders got an early leaked build running in Control, and Tom’s Hardware reported an RTX 5070 Ti falling from 71 FPS to 35 FPS at 4K with it enabled. That is an unofficial build in a game with no official support, so it is directional at best, but it lines up uncomfortably well with the cost NVIDIA is quoting.
About that Blackwell exclusivity #
The same leaked build has been poked at rather thoroughly. Community developers moved it from the original FP8 workload to an FP16 path and got it running on RTX 20 and RTX 30 cards, and even inside emulators and older DirectX titles, according to TechPowerUp. Results were erratic: Red Dead Redemption worked, its sequel did not, Hogwarts Legacy hung, and Grand Theft Auto V reportedly ran about ten seconds before the test rig lost its display output.
None of that is a usable feature, and nobody should read it as one. But it does suggest the architectural gate is softer than the marketing implies, and that the RTX 50 requirement is at least partly a decision about where NVIDIA wanted to spend its optimisation effort. The company has not commented on which generations might eventually be supported.
What we still do not know #
Quite a lot, honestly. One launch title is a thin basis for judging a rendering technique, and a sports game is an odd showcase for something pitched on lighting and material fidelity. Image quality claims will not survive contact with reality until people can compare it against native and against DLSS 4 in games that actually stress it. And the performance picture depends entirely on how you feel about frame generation carrying the result.
DLSS 5 arrives September 3 at 9 PM Pacific. The interesting question is not whether it looks good in NBA 2K27, but what the second and third games do with it.
