A new version of the DLSS Unlocked mod has added support for DLSS 5 and multi-frame generation for Nvidia RTX 40, RTX 30, and RTX 20-series graphics cards, as VideoCardz reports.
Although it was already possible to play with generative AI upscaling in some modded games, this tool combines it with frame generation to help offset the significant performance impact of Nvidia's latest game beautification tech.
DLSS 5 officially launched last week on NBA 2K27, and the response has been mixed. While some like the more lifelike visuals, others feel they compromised the artist's integrity and were far from consistent. That's especially true in unofficial modded games with DLSS 5, where performance can be degraded significantly. Adding frame generation helps a lot, though, and DLSS Unlocked may be the simplest way to do so.
Available on NexusMods, DLSS Unlocked enables DLSS 3 frame generation on all RTX 20, 30, and 40 series cards, as well as multi-frame generation via AMD's FSR 3.1 system. It also supports Nvidia's neural rendering (DLSS 5) through OptiScaler_DLSSNR.
The tool only supports games that run on DirectX 12 and have native DLSS Upscaling and DLSS frame generation. If you have the right game and this mod in place, you should be able to run the new DLSS 5 neural rendering alongside multi-frame generation, even on older cards.
Nvidia has said it will bring official DLSS 5 support to its RTX 40-series GPUs, enabling official frame generation (not multi-frame tools), although the performance impact is likely to be more significant. As it stands, even the official implementation of DLSS 5 on an RTX 5090 still significantly reduces performance.
That's why early mods that got the new DLSS technology working on RTX 30-series GPUs encountered frame rates in the single digits, even at 720p and 1080p resolution. Power consumption massively spiked, too, highlighting how inefficient it is, even with the dedicated hardware accelerators that make it more viable on RTX 50-series graphics cards.
It's likely that DLSS 5 and its successors will require a new generation of hardware to be more efficient and useful, but in the meantime, mods are letting just about anyone play around with it.
If you do try out the tool, be careful with online play. While the performance and visual effects will be effective in multiplayer titles, they do modify game files, which could be detected by anti-cheat tools and get you banned.
