Designing a Scalable AI-Powered Serverless Text-to-Speech System with AWS Polly A developer built a fully serverless text-to-speech application on AWS, using Amazon Polly for speech synthesis behind a React frontend, API Gateway, Lambda, and S3. The system's key engineering feature is a dynamic fallback mechanism in the Lambda layer that selects a compatible Polly voice engine when a requested voice does not support the preferred engine type, avoiding hardcoded voice-engine pairings. The developer chose Polly over open-source TTS models to avoid managing ML infrastructure, citing pay-per-use cost and automatic scaling. Recently, I engineered a fully serverless AI-powered Text-to-Speech application using AWS services, focused on scalability, intelligent voice handling, low operational cost, and production-level reliability. What looked like a simple “text → audio” feature actually involved solving multiple real-world engineering challenges around AI voice generation, architecture design, fallback handling, latency, and cost optimization. Project Goal The objective was to create a system where: Why I Chose AWS Polly Instead of Open-Source Models One of the biggest decisions in this project was choosing the right AI speech engine. Initially, open-source TTS models looked attractive, but after deeper evaluation, several practical issues appeared: Instead of spending resources managing ML infrastructure, I focused on solving the actual business problem efficiently. That is where Amazon Polly became the ideal choice. Intelligent Voice Engine Handling One of the most interesting engineering parts of this project was how voice generation was handled dynamically. AWS Polly provides multiple voice engine types: But the challenge was: ⚠ Not every voice supports every engine type. For example: So I designed a smart fallback mechanism inside the Lambda layer. Smart AI Voice Fallback Logic Whenever a request comes from frontend: This solved multiple production problems: This made the system more intelligent instead of relying on hardcoded voice-engine combinations. Full Architecture Flow 1. Frontend Layer React.js The user enters text and selects a voice. 2. API Gateway — Entry Point API Gateway acts as the secure frontend-facing layer. It handles: This removed the need for maintaining any servers. 3. AWS Lambda — AI Processing Layer Lambda became the brain of the system. Responsibilities included: Since Lambda runs only when triggered: 4. Amazon Polly — AI Speech Synthesis Amazon Polly processed the text using advanced speech synthesis models and generated highly natural MP3 audio. Depending on compatibility: 5. AWS S3 — Audio Storage Layer Generated MP3 files were uploaded to S3 buckets. Lambda returned the public audio URL back to frontend instantly. Frontend Audio Playback On frontend:
