Every time you use another company's AI chat, the brainpower and reasoning and emotional effort is being fed into a system which is getting meaningfully better at doing what you do every day: the architecture or hiring decision you argued your coworker out of, the way you negotiate a contract, the domain-specific knowledge that took you a decade to learn. The limiting factor of how much those frontier systems can *become* you is mostly a function of how good you are at explaining yourself.\n\nThe question is whether I'm somehow losing something human in the bargain — if there's something easy and cheap about accepting the default answer, particularly when I'm not personally an expert on the topic. How do I judge the answer? I just end up doing what the thing says. It doesn't feel good. It's dehumanizing.\n\nThere's an answer to that.\n\nHumans benefit from vastly different life experiences, families of origin, and educational and vocational journeys. Those diverse perspectives are what make us so good at creating the world we live in now. Large language models similarly arrive with different training data, reinforcement learning, and post-training. In communicating, they must reconcile their differences out loud.\n\nStop asking one model. Ask a bunch and make them argue.\n\nInteresting art has always emerged from misunderstood contrarians building narrow things which seem crazy to the average person. The most exciting products will come from solving an edge case no rational person or lab would ever prioritize.\n\nWhat I keep coming back to are systems that outlive the people who built them. Not uptime, an operational word, measured in \"nines\" and quarters. I mean generations. Software still doing its job when the person who created it is gone. Nobody maintains it. Nobody can switch it off, because no one holds the switch. If all the software exists in the two or three models owned by two or three Corporations, what do you really own?\n\nWe're reaching the final form of software, less about UI and more about data and permanence; the internet is being rewritten right now, in front of us. New questions are emerging: What can companies do with what you give them? What are you allowed to ask and of whom? Who reads a document, and who wrote it? How do you prove the provenance of anything? What is a person's individual judgment worth once it's ingested into systems that are always taking notes?\n\nTo build systems that last, we need to control who owns our data and what they do with it.\n\nCowboy is that platform.
