The French streaming platform's flood of synthetic music highlights a growing tension between AI-generated content and creator economics that extends well beyond the music industry.
Deezer, the French music streaming platform, says more than 90,000 AI-generated tracks were uploaded to its platform daily in June. To put that in perspective, that’s roughly one new AI song every single second of every single day.
The number represents a staggering acceleration. Daily AI track uploads sat at around 10,000 in January 2025. By April 2026, they had climbed to approximately 75,000, accounting for 44% of all new uploads on the platform.
A firehose of synthetic content #
Deezer has been more aggressive than most platforms in actually trying to quantify the problem. The company began tagging AI-generated music in mid-2025 and tagged more than 13.4 million AI tracks throughout the year.
The platform also rolled out a free AI music detection tool in June 2026 that works across rival services including Spotify and Apple Music.
Over 70% of unofficial anthems related to the 2026 World Cup on Deezer were AI-generated.
Deezer’s response has been to exclude fully AI-generated tracks from editorial playlists and algorithmic recommendations while still allowing them on the platform with proper labeling. The company has also moved to demonetize fraudulent AI streams.
Why crypto and Web3 should be paying attention #
The core problem Deezer faces is one that blockchain projects have been trying to solve for years. When anyone can generate infinite content at near-zero cost, how do you verify authenticity, attribute ownership, and distribute value fairly?
Projects building on-chain music platforms, like Audius and Sound.xyz, now face the same existential challenge. If AI can flood a decentralized platform with synthetic tracks, the permissionless ethos of Web3 becomes a double-edged sword. You can’t exactly deploy a content moderation team on a decentralized protocol the way Deezer can tag and demonetize tracks on its centralized platform.
The economics of infinite supply #
Music streaming already pays artists fractions of a cent per stream. When the catalog doubles or triples with zero-cost AI content, even those fractions get smaller.
The royalty implications alone are significant. If 44% of new uploads are AI-generated and those tracks accumulate even modest stream counts, they siphon revenue from human artists under most pro-rata payment models. Deezer’s demonetization of fraudulent AI streams is an attempt to plug that leak.
Deezer’s approach of labeling rather than banning is worth noting. The company isn’t trying to stop AI music from existing. It’s trying to make sure listeners and rights holders know what they’re getting.
