DeepSeek upgrades V4 Pro, draws direct comparison to Anthropic’s Claude Fable

DeepSeek upgraded its V4 Pro model with a 1M-token context window and priced it at $0.43 per million input tokens and $0.87 per million output tokens, claiming it trails Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 by only 5% on key benchmarks while costing roughly 45 times less per token. The Hangzhou-based lab, backed by High-Flyer, expects general availability by mid-August 2026 and will support OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible APIs.

The Chinese AI lab says its newest model trails Claude Fable by just 5% on key benchmarks while costing roughly 45 times less per token

DeepSeek just made the AI pricing conversation a lot more uncomfortable for its Western competitors. The Hangzhou-based lab upgraded its V4 Pro model with a 1M-token context window, then promptly pointed out that Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5, which launched on June 9, scores only about 5% better on key benchmarks despite charging roughly 45 times more for API access.

The numbers that matter #

DeepSeek V4 Pro is currently available in preview with API access, and general availability is expected by mid-August 2026. On the pricing front, DeepSeek is charging approximately $0.43 per million input tokens and $0.87 per million output tokens.

Compare that to Claude Fable 5’s $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. The math is stark: for every dollar spent on Claude Fable output tokens, a developer could run the equivalent of roughly 57 queries through DeepSeek V4 Pro.

Benchmark results tell a more nuanced story, though. Claude Fable 5 leads on broader intelligence metrics, scoring roughly 59.9 compared to DeepSeek V4 Pro’s 44.3 on one widely cited index. That’s a meaningful gap on general reasoning. But DeepSeek’s model holds its own, and in some cases pulls ahead, on specific coding and analytical tasks.

DeepSeek’s rapid ascent #

DeepSeek is backed by High-Flyer, a Chinese quantitative hedge fund. The lab has moved quickly from relative obscurity to genuine contender status, releasing a series of models that have consistently punched above their weight class on cost-adjusted performance.

A 1M-token context window puts V4 Pro in the same tier as the most capable models on the market. For context, one million tokens is roughly equivalent to processing 750,000 words in a single prompt, enough to digest several novels or an entire codebase at once.

DeepSeek also announced that V4 Pro and V4 Flash will support both OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic-compatible APIs, with additional features expected by early August 2026.

What this means for the AI landscape #

Anthropic has positioned Claude Fable 5 as a premium product for high-end coding and knowledge-intensive tasks. A 5% edge is a harder sell when the cost difference is measured in orders of magnitude.

For enterprise buyers running millions of API calls per month, the economics are impossible to ignore. A company spending $500,000 annually on Claude Fable API calls could theoretically achieve roughly comparable results for around $11,000 through DeepSeek. The counterargument is obvious and real: many enterprises, particularly in regulated industries, won’t route sensitive data through a Chinese AI provider regardless of price. Data sovereignty concerns, compliance requirements, and geopolitical risk all factor into procurement decisions. DeepSeek’s Chinese origins remain a significant barrier to adoption in certain markets.
