Chinese artificial intelligence start-up DeepSeek is embarking on what it calls an “unprecedented” hiring spree to overhaul backend systems severely strained by booming user demand and compute-heavy AI agents.
who joined DeepSeek in Marchto lead its Harness team, said on social media platform X on Monday evening that the Hangzhou-based company was seeking to recruit around 150 senior backend engineers.
According to Cui, the push was driven by rapid surges in data volumes, machine numbers, training workloads and active users.
“In computing, once anything scales up in quantity, it leads to a massive increase in complexity,” Cui wrote, noting that DeepSeek’s current backend infrastructure was reaching its limits and must be extensively upgraded, maintained and rewritten to support new technical directions.
The sharpened focus on infrastructure engineering signals a strategic maturation for DeepSeek. As the open-weight champion transitions from a research disrupter into a high-volume platform, it is boosting the underlying engine required to deliver reliable, enterprise-grade commercial services.
The expansion comes as the company continues to scale aggressively. In June, DeepSeek announced plans to “at least double the size of every department”, opening 33 distinct roles across research, engineering and product management.
