The restructuring marks a sharp turn away from the strategy that put the lab on the map.**\n\nGoogle Deepmind has broken up the team behind AlphaFold, [the Financial Times reports](https://www.ft.com/content/61b2953d-ee0d-45de-af6e-a9c1cf524b33). Most of the original authors of the AlphaFold papers were reassigned internally over the past year.\n\nDeepmind confirmed the moves. The researchers are now working on projects built around Google's Gemini large language model, as well as enzyme design, nuclear fusion, and genomics. Others transferred to [Isomorphic Labs](https://the-decoder.com/alphabets-isomorphic-labs-raises-2-1-billion-to-scale-ai-drug-discovery-toward-clinical-trials/), the Alphabet subsidiary focused on drug discovery that was spun out of Deepmind in 2021 and has partnerships with Novartis and Eli Lilly. Nearly a quarter of the full-time Google Deepmind authors of the original AlphaFold papers have left the company entirely, according to the FT.\n\n[AlphaFold](https://the-decoder.com/google-deepmind-releases-alphafold-3-for-scientific-use/), developed starting in 2018, predicts the three-dimensional structure of proteins. John Jumper, vice president and engineering fellow, and Deepmind CEO Demis Hassabis received the 2024 [Nobel Prize in Chemistry](https://the-decoder.com/nobel-prize-in-chemistry-google-deepmind-ai-researchers-honoured-for-protein-breakthrough/) for the work. The project became the defining example of Deepmind's strategy of pursuing long-term scientific breakthroughs through dedicated research teams.\n\nThat approach is now being abandoned. \"Our strategy over the last nine years has been to focus on grand challenges . . . a concrete goal every project is focused on,\" Pushmeet Kohli, vice president of research at Google Deepmind, where he founded and leads the AI for Science team, told the FT. \"The strategy has evolved.\"\n\nRather than simply organizing researchers around single scientific problems like protein folding, the lab is now also building Gemini-powered systems that can assist scientists and eventually automate parts of the scientific process. At the same time, Deepmind is competing with OpenAI and Anthropic to build frontier AI agents.\n\n## Key talent is heading to rivals\n\nThe departures hit the inner circle. Earlier this year, Jumper and fellow AlphaFold researcher Jonas Adler moved to Google's internal \"Code Strike\" team, a group assembled to improve the company's AI coding capabilities as it seeks to catch Anthropic and OpenAI. Last month, Jumper announced his [move to Anthropic](https://the-decoder.com/google-deepmind-loses-another-top-ai-researcher-as-nobel-laureate-john-jumper-leaves-for-anthropic/), where he'll be joined by Adler and AlphaFold colleague Alexander Pritzel.\n\nOne Deepmind employee, who asked not to be named, told the FT that all three had been \"instrumental, important, core members\" of the company and that their departures had sparked surprise internally.\n\nDeepmind said it is \"incredibly proud\" of its scientific heritage and the global impact of AlphaFold, \"which inspired the launch of Isomorphic Labs with the mission to reimagine drug discovery.\" Anthropic launched [Claude Science for biology and drug discovery](https://the-decoder.com/anthropic-launches-claude-science-an-ai-workspace-built-specifically-for-researchers/) earlier this year.\n\n```\nAI News Without the Hype – Curated by Humans\n\n\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to THE DECODER for ad-free reading, a weekly AI newsletter, our exclusive \"AI Radar\" frontier report six times a year, full archive access, and access to our comment section.\t\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe now\nRead on for the full picture.Subscribe for hype-free coverage.\n\nAccess to all THE DECODER articles.\nRead without distractions – no Google ads.\nAccess to comments and community discussions.\nWeekly AI newsletter.\n6 times a year: “AI Radar” – deep dives on key AI topics.\nUp to 25 % off on KI Pro online events.\nAccess to our full ten-year archive.\nGet the latest AI news from The Decoder.\n\nSubscribe to The Decoder\n```\n\n", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/deepmind-dismantles-its-alphafold-team-as-key-authors-leave-for-anthropic", "canonical_source": "https://the-decoder.com/deepmind-dismantles-its-alphafold-team-as-key-authors-leave-for-anthropic/", "published_at": "2026-07-29 13:47:11+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-07-29 14:13:56.045184+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "ai-research", "ai-startups"], "entities": ["Google Deepmind", "AlphaFold", "Anthropic", "John Jumper", "Demis Hassabis", "Isomorphic Labs", "Pushmeet Kohli", "Financial Times"], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/deepmind-dismantles-its-alphafold-team-as-key-authors-leave-for-anthropic", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/deepmind-dismantles-its-alphafold-team-as-key-authors-leave-for-anthropic.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/deepmind-dismantles-its-alphafold-team-as-key-authors-leave-for-anthropic.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/deepmind-dismantles-its-alphafold-team-as-key-authors-leave-for-anthropic.jsonld"}}
