A note from Matt Garman, CEO, AWS #

Team, Sharing a leadership update with you all. After nearly 19 years at AWS, Dave Brown has decided to take a new role outside of the company. Dave has been a big part of what we have built at AWS, and I want to personally thank him for all of his contributions in helping grow and develop the technology, the business, and the team. In his time here, starting in Cape Town and finishing in Seattle, Dave has been a strong leader, builder, innovator, and friend for me and many of you across the team. I will definitely miss working together with him, and I hope you will all join me in wishing him all the best on his next adventure.

The good news is that the AWS business and team has never been in a stronger position, and I have never been more optimistic about the incredible opportunity we have ahead of us. I am excited to announce that Dave Treadwell, current Senior Vice President of eCommerce Foundation, will move over to AWS effective 8/1 to lead the AWS Compute and ML Services team going forward. I’ve worked alongside Dave as part of the S-Team for the last five years and seen firsthand how he has advocated for his team, pushed those around him to think differently, driven a culture of operational excellence, and obsessed over his customers. He brings nearly a decade of global experience of running Amazon’s entire technology platform, one of the biggest applications in the world, and has deep expertise in running technology at the same scale we do. Many of you already know Dave (or Tread as he’s commonly known) as one of our largest, and most vocal customers. He has challenged us to innovate in new ways, and I have no doubt he will bring this same sense of innovation to this new role. Congrats and thank you, Tread, for taking on this new position.

To ensure a smooth transition and that we stay focused on delivering for customers, Dave Brown will remain with us until the end of July and work alongside Tread as he comes up to speed.

Thanks, Matt

Thanks for the kind words, Matt.

Looking back over the last 19 years, I can’t imagine having spent them anywhere else. From my early days as a developer working on EC2 – not really understanding what it would become – to having the opportunity to work alongside so many incredibly talented people building technology that millions of customers around the world rely on every day, it has been an extraordinary journey. What we have achieved together, and continue to achieve, is truly remarkable.

As difficult as it is to leave, it feels like the right time for me to begin a new chapter. I know there will be many things I’ll miss, but without question I’ll miss the people the most. Amazon has always been an incredible place for builders, and I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some of the smartest, most driven builders anywhere. I’ll always be grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and for the chance to be part of the AWS story.

I’m also excited for what’s ahead for the team. Having worked with Tread on the S-Team over the past few years, I know the organization is in outstanding hands. He’s an exceptional leader with deep technical expertise, relentless customer focus, and a genuine passion for building strong teams. I know you’ll continue to accomplish incredible things together.

I’ll be cheering you all on from the sidelines.

Dave

Thanks, Matt for giving me this opportunity. Even before I joined Amazon ten years ago, I’ve been in awe at the ability of the AWS team to innovate rapidly, to operate at a scale for customers that no-one else on the planet can, and to deliver with exceptional service resilience and efficiency. I’m very excited to now be part of the team I’ve deeply admired for so long.

Also, Dave, thanks for everything you have done over the years. You’re handing over one of the world’s most innovative teams, and I’m excited to get to know them and learn from them over the coming weeks and years.

Over the coming weeks I look forward to meeting with you and learning from you all as we continue to innovate and deliver for our customers.

Onward!

Tread
