But it was built for power moving south: it ignores power moving north.\n\nSo, let's imagine losing three lines on the main California-Oregon link while 3,600 MW is heading north. California would suddenly be short 3,600 MW of customers while the Northwest is stuck with 3,600 MW of power it cannot sell. Neither side has a plan for this, and it will only get worse and more consequential as more power goes in one direction, and more data center point loads are added at the other.\n\nSupply is deeply out of sync. You can build solar and wind faster than you can build power lines, and you can shut a coal plant faster than you can build power lines. The resulting problems are discovered only *after* they show up, and at grid scale.\n\n## Demand now disappears, not supply\n\n**On July 22 at 7:56 a.m., there was a \"blip\" in the northeastern U.S. grid**\n\nMore than 3 GW of demand in northern Virginia, about 3% of the regional grid, vanished in seconds, as a few large data centers had switched to their own backup power. Frequency jumped across the eastern half of the country, but the grid held. barely.\n\nTexas recorded eight similar events between 2020 and 2023. Most happened near one Gulf Coast plant, each dropping 400 to 700 MW.. Another West Texas event dropped about 1,560 MW.\n\nIreland has logged four recent major data center drop-offs.
