The AI cloud provider's regulatory filing lays bare the risks of building an entire business on a single chipmaker's hardware.
CoreWeave has done something unusual for a company riding one of the hottest trades in tech: it told investors, in plain language, that its biggest strength is also its biggest vulnerability.
In a regulatory filing, the AI-focused cloud infrastructure provider warned that transitioning away from Nvidia’s GPUs could demand significant time and financial resources. The company currently runs its entire operation on Nvidia’s artificial intelligence hardware.
The Nvidia dependency problem #
CoreWeave’s filing acknowledged that if customer preferences shift away from Nvidia products, it would need to invest heavily to source alternative AI chip providers. No immediate plans to diversify were mentioned.
The relationship between the two companies runs deep, and it keeps getting deeper. Nvidia invested $2 billion in CoreWeave stock at $87.20 per share in January 2026, expanding what was already one of the most significant partnerships in the AI infrastructure space. CoreWeave, which went public in March 2025, has built its entire cloud computing platform around multiple generations of Nvidia technology.
The company has ambitious plans to surpass 5 gigawatts of AI factory capacity by 2030, all of it leveraging Nvidia hardware.
Why single-supplier risk matters in AI #
For CoreWeave, this dynamic cuts both ways. Being Nvidia’s close partner gives the company preferential access to the most sought-after chips in technology. Having Nvidia as both a supplier and a $2 billion investor is a competitive advantage that’s hard to overstate. But the filing forces investors to consider a scenario where the winds change. What if customers start demanding infrastructure built on alternative chips? In any such scenario, CoreWeave would be starting from scratch. Rebuilding data center architecture around different hardware involves rethinking cooling systems, networking infrastructure, software stacks, and customer integration layers.
A calculated bet, not a blind one #
CoreWeave isn’t pretending the risk doesn’t exist. The filing itself is evidence that the company understands its exposure and is communicating it transparently.
CoreWeave has carved out a niche as a specialized AI cloud provider, differentiating itself from the hyperscalers by offering GPU-optimized infrastructure tailored specifically for AI workloads. That specialization, combined with Nvidia’s financial backing, has made CoreWeave one of the most closely watched companies in the AI supply chain.
