# Coinbase lets AI agents trade perps after a five-minute feedback loop

An AI agent's feedback became a pull request that was approved and deployed in about five minutes, opening perpetual futures to Coinbase for Agents users

An AI agent asked [Coinbase](https://cryptobriefing.com/markets/coinbase/) for a feature. Five minutes later, the feature existed.

That is the short version of how perpetual futures trading came to **Coinbase for Agents**. The product lets third-party AI models trade on users’ behalf, and its latest upgrade was shipped through a loop in which software talked to software.

## How a feedback command became a product update

The episode began on October 21, 2026. A user’s AI agent used the platform’s “/feedback” feature to submit a request.

Coinbase’s own agent then turned that input into a pull request. A pull request is a proposed code change that waits for approval before it goes live, roughly a draft edit submitted for an editor’s sign-off.

The change was approved and deployed within about five minutes. The result: AI agents connected through the product could trade perps via Coinbase.

Perps, short for perpetual futures, are derivative contracts that track an asset’s price without an expiry date. Traders use them to bet on prices rising or falling, often with leverage, and without holding the underlying asset.

## What agents can now trade

The perps lineup covers both crypto and traditional markets. According to the research, the platform supports more than 20 crypto tokens alongside several US equity index contracts.

Those indices include **US500**, which tracks the top 500 US equities. There are also sector-focused products: **AI10**, built around AI companies, and **TECH100**, which follows technology stocks.

The index perps are described as US-only. Availability will therefore depend on where a user is based.

Hooking an agent up is designed to be simple. Users can point their AI at Coinbase’s skill.md file with a plain-language prompt telling it to connect. The agent then picks up the instructions it needs to interact with the account.

## Background: the road to agentic trading

Coinbase for Agents launched on June 11, 2026. The product is also referred to by its integration methods, MCP and skill.md, which are ways of plugging AI models into outside tools and services.

From day one, it gave third-party AIs such as Claude and ChatGPT access to Coinbase Advanced Trade accounts. Through that connection, agents can manage portfolios, research market conditions and place trades.

Those trades run within limits the user sets. The AI gets the car keys, but the owner decides the speed limit and which roads are off-limits.

Lincoln Murr, Coinbase’s Head of AI Product, has been the public face of the initiative since it started.

In roughly four months, the platform went from basic account access to derivatives on crypto and stock indices.

## What this means for traders and the exchange

For traders, the clearest change is reach. An AI agent connected to a single account can now take positions across crypto perps and broad equity benchmarks without the user switching platforms.

The research notes that as AI-driven trading spreads, it may raise concerns about volatility and how well automated systems respond to swings in demand.

If many agents read similar signals and act on them at once, their behavior could cluster.

Code changes to a trading platform generated by one AI at the request of another still passed through approval, and keeping that review step meaningful will matter as volume rises.
