Most internal Slack bots do one thing well: answer questions, then disappear into the channel history. Coinbase’s new one goes a step further and actually pays for the answers.
The company demonstrated an internal Slack bot on August 18, 2026, built on its Developer Platform, that allows AI agents to autonomously purchase services on demand using USDC micropayments. The bot plugs into AWS’s Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments, searches a marketplace called the x402 Bazaar, finds a relevant service, and settles the transaction before most people finish reading the Slack notification.
How the bot actually works #
An employee @mentions the bot in Slack with a question. The agent searches the x402 Bazaar, which currently lists over 10,000 payable services, selects the appropriate one, and completes a USDC payment autonomously. The whole cycle, from query to settled transaction, takes roughly 200 milliseconds on Base.
Transaction costs run at fractions of a cent. No subscriptions. No manual approvals. No invoice sitting in accounts payable for 30 days. The bot operates within predefined spend limits, and within those limits, it acts immediately.
The underlying standard making this possible is x402, an open HTTP-native protocol that Coinbase introduced on May 6, 2025. The name comes from HTTP status code 402, the original “Payment Required” error that has existed in web specifications since the early 1990s but was never implemented at scale. Coinbase’s protocol finally gives that code a practical use: a machine requests a service, the server responds with a 402 and payment instructions, and the machine pays and retries, all without human involvement.
AWS’s AgentCore Payments reached general availability in August 2026 after an initial preview in May 2026. Coinbase and Stripe were among the early partners in that preview period.
Why this matters beyond the Slack channel #
The broader concept Coinbase is advancing is what it calls Agentic Payments, the idea that AI agents should be able to transact economically, not just converse. A customer support agent that can pay a logistics API 10 cents to retrieve real-time tracking data, without anyone setting up a billing relationship in advance, closes the gap between what an agent can do and what it can access.
USDC is the settlement asset throughout. Every x402 transaction is a USDC transaction, and Base is the network where the economics work at this fee level. Coinbase issues USDC through Circle, operates Base, and built x402.
Businesses that want to accept payments through x402 can reportedly do so with minimal configuration, which lowers the barrier compared to traditional payment processor integrations that can take weeks and require compliance reviews.
