# Cohere follows Nokia with open RAN app support

Cohere Technologies expanded its open radio access network (RAN) capabilities with support for a 5G/6G-centric app communication protocol.

The vendor now supports the E3 interface via integration into its Universal Spectrum Multiplier (USM), ECHO (Enhanced Channel Insight with Holographic Observability), and Pulsone waveone platform. With the embedded capability, Cohere deploys distributed applications (dApps), which manage network functions across a wide area instead of a single server.

The open software connects directly with base stations to process sub-10 millisecond (MS) tasks including AI inference, sensing, and dynamic resource management.

Cohere’s product development echoes Nokia’s launch this week of[ a commercial AI radio access network (AI-RAN) platform](https://www.sdxcentral.com/news/nokia-hopes-operators-are-ready-to-embrace-the-ai-ran-hype-cycle/). The suite [also supports the E3 interface](https://the-mobile-network.com/2026/07/when-it-comes-to-nokias-new-ai-ran-keep-your-eye-on-the-dapps/) for dApp deployment, which comes developed courtesy of the O-RAN Alliance’s next Generation Research Group (nGRG).

In its product announcement, Cohere touted full compatibility with more O-RAN frameworks, enabling coordination with xApps and rApps, and enhanced support for satellite direct-to-device (D2D) communication and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) kit.

Cohere also pointed to 6G fundamentals such as integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). The firm was [recently awarded a $28 million contract](https://www.sdxcentral.com/news/cohere-technologies-to-develop-invisible-surveillance-using-5g-and-6g/) by the Department of Defense (DoD) to build a sovereign and mission-critical ISAC capability which would effectively provide ‘invisible’ surveillance.

With the E3 integration, Cohere also promised easier leverage of Delay-Doppler domain insights and its particular orthogonal time-frequency and space (OTFS) modulation, a mathematic-based waveform tech which packs data into radio waves across a two-dimensional grid.

“The establishment of the E3 interface marks a significant advancement for open RAN ecosystems,” said Ray Dolan, CEO and chairman of Cohere Technologies. “This commitment is an important step toward realizing truly open and AI-driven wireless networks.”

Previous steps from Cohere have included the formation [of its Pulsone Technology unit](https://www.sdxcentral.com/news/cohere-reveals-mother-of-waveforms-to-power-next-gen-networks/). Centered around its Zak-OTFS offering, Cohere partnered with Duke University and Virginia Tech to demonstrate [a real-time neural receiver running on Nvidia's Jetson platform](https://www.cohere-tech.com/isac/), which reportedly offers ISAC without a trade-off on capacity.
