Cognition buys Poke to plant its AI agent inside your text messages

Cognition, the $26 billion startup behind the autonomous coding agent Devin, has acquired The Interaction Company of California, makers of Poke, the first AI agent Apple officially supports inside iMessage, in a deal announced July 23, 2026. Poke has logged over 100 million message exchanges since its March 2026 launch, and the acquisition signals Cognition's bet that embedding AI agents in existing messaging channels like SMS and iMessage will drive consumer adoption better than standalone apps.

Cognition, the $26 billion startup behind the autonomous coding agent Devin, has acquired The Interaction Company of California, makers of Poke, the only AI agent Apple officially supports inside iMessage.

The deal, announced July 23, 2026, is the clearest sign yet that the most valuable real estate in the AI agent wars isn't a new app. It's the message thread you already have open.

Poke launched publicly in March 2026 and spent several months working through Apple's approval process before becoming the first AI agent cleared to operate on the Messages for Business platform in early June. That clearance required Poke to prove it could handle AI disclosure, escalate to live human support, and meet full UI compliance - a bar that kept every competitor out. In the roughly three months since launch, Poke has logged over 100 million message exchanges across SMS, Telegram, and select WhatsApp markets. Cognition's co-founders Scott Wu and Walden were early investors in Interaction. So this acquisition has roots that predate the public announcement by a meaningful stretch.

Why messaging beats the app store #

The strategic logic isn't subtle. Consumer AI retention is miserable right now. Most people who try a new AI app open it twice and forget about it. Poke sidesteps that problem entirely by living in SMS and iMessage, channels people already check dozens of times a day out of pure habit. You don't download Poke. You don't create an account. You text it. That changes the behavioural calculus completely: Poke doesn't compete with ChatGPT for mindshare on a home screen - it competes with your group chat, which is a different game.

There's a theory circulating among AI investors that the next durable distribution channel runs on the communications rails people already trust: SMS, iMessage, the threads they check out of habit. That's not a small claim. Apple's opaque ID system, which anonymizes user identity before passing it to Poke rather than exposing a phone number or iCloud account, gives users a degree of privacy that standalone AI apps can't easily replicate. That privacy architecture matters for consumer trust, and it took Poke months to earn Apple's sign-off on it. No competitor can shortcut that approval process.

Cognition plans to accelerate Poke using its own models and infrastructure while leaving the existing user experience alone. That restraint is notable for a company that raised $1 billion at a $25 billion pre-money valuation in May 2026 and currently writes 89% of its own code through Devin. Cognition could have folded Poke into its developer-facing product line. It chose not to. The bet here is on ambient presence: an agent that proactively follows up on your needs, manages your calendar, and handles daily logistics without requiring you to open anything.

Frankly, this is a bet against the standalone AI app as a category. The apps that have tried to build habitual consumer AI usage on their own download funnels have mostly failed to hold attention past the novelty phase. Poke's 100 million messages in three months suggests that embedding in existing behaviour works better than asking people to change it. Cognition is paying for that insight as much as for the team or the technology.

What comes after Devin #

The acquisition also says something about what Cognition thinks comes after Devin. Devin is a B2B product: it writes code for engineering teams, counts Goldman Sachs and Mercedes-Benz among its customers, and grew revenue from $37 million in May 2025 to $492 million a year later, according to TechCrunch. That trajectory is extraordinary, but it's also a ceiling - enterprise software engineering is a finite market. Consumer agents running at messaging scale are not. Buying Poke gives Cognition a foothold in a much larger surface area and a very different kind of distribution than enterprise sales cycles.

The key question everyone is asking is whether Poke keeps its shape or gets absorbed into Devin's orbit. Cognition says the user experience stays intact, which is the right call. What Cognition actually bought is the habit loop Poke is already building with real users, inside a channel Apple has spent years trying to open to business communication. Breaking that loop to rebrand it as "Devin for consumers" would waste the most important thing Cognition just bought: a genuine toe-hold in a walled garden that every other AI agent company is still standing outside of.
