OpenAI let Codex users bank unused rate-limit resets for later, then set a quiet 30-day clock on them, and developers are losing resets they didn't know were ticking.
Codex CLI added reset banking in a June 11, 2026 changelog update. Eligible ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers can save a rate-limit reset and trigger it whenever they actually need it, instead of waiting for the usual 5-hour or weekly refresh. There's a catch nobody advertised loudly. Banked resets expire 30 days after they're granted, and developers are reporting losses hitting as early as August 1 and August 12, 2026, right as resets tied to OpenAI's July milestone bonuses run out. Nobody warned them.
The launch came with an incentive built in. From June 11 through June 24, OpenAI ran a referral promotion that gave both the referrer and the invited user an extra banked reset the moment the invitee sent their first Codex message. There's no way to simply buy additional resets. Banking is the only lever paid subscribers get to manage a usage spike, which is exactly why losing one silently stings.
The complaints are concentrated in one place: a GitHub issue, openai/codex#28888, titled "Extend banked Codex reset expiration beyond 30 days." Its author argues the window is too short to smooth out a real developer's schedule. A vacation. A sick week. A slow month where you barely touch Codex. Any of those can burn through 30 days and cost you a reset you earned, without OpenAI ever flagging that the clock was running.
On the OpenAI Developer Community forum, a Pro subscriber described a banked reset tied to a July 15 usage-limit announcement that simply disappeared. No notification, no warning, just gone. Related GitHub issues tell the same story from different angles. Issue #28805 asks OpenAI to show users their banked reset count and expiration date inside Codex itself, because right now there's no way to check your balance. Issue #28811 documents a reset that fired immediately instead of being banked as promised. Issue #32586 proposes the obvious fix: auto-redeem unused resets before they expire, rather than letting them vanish silently.
Why the clock is ticking #
The banking system exists because Codex is growing faster than almost anything else OpenAI has shipped this year. Weekly active users across Codex and ChatGPT Work crossed 10 million on July 21, 2026, according to reports corroborated by TheNextWeb and Unite.AI, up from roughly 6 million just nine days earlier. OpenAI's own growth curve is stark. About 2 million weekly Codex users in mid-March, past 5 million by June, 6 million by July 12, then 10 million nine days after that. OpenAI marked the 7 million milestone by granting every eligible user a free banked reset, then repeated the gesture for paid subscribers at 10 million. Nine days. Four million more users. That's the pace OpenAI is trying to ration compute against.
Here's the thing: rationing through an expiration window nobody explains is a strange way to reward loyalty. Codex switched from per-message pricing to token-based billing on April 2, 2026, the same day ChatGPT Business dropped to $20 a seat annually. A $100-a-month tier followed a week later. It offered five times the usage of Plus, briefly boosted to ten times through a promotion that ran until May 31. Every one of those changes was about usage and what developers get for their money. Banked resets were framed as one more form of generosity. A benefit that quietly disappears 30 days after it's granted isn't generosity. It's a trap with good PR.
The fix is not complicated #
None of this makes Codex a bad product, and it doesn't make OpenAI's team dishonest. Compute is finite, and Codex's growth curve outran anyone's forecast. But the fix developers are asking for in #28888 and #32586 isn't complicated. Show the expiration date. Send a warning before it lapses. Auto-redeem the reset before it's lost. OpenAI has shipped far more complex billing logic this year than a countdown timer bolted onto a menu that already lists banked resets.
