Codex 0.162 Lets the Model Create Git Worktrees. Its Own Working Directory Doesn't Move Codex CLI 0.162.0, released October 8, 2026, added three tools — create_worktree, get_worktree_creation_status and list_worktrees — that let the model create and list managed Git worktrees on its own initiative, but the task's working directory stays in the original checkout by design, according to the pull request #50148 and the tool descriptions. The tools are available only when the worktrees feature is enabled (registered as Stage::Stable with default_enabled: true in the 0.162.0 feature registry), the project is a trusted local project, and attachment storage is available; explicitly untrusted projects and ephemeral side conversations are refused. A 0.162.1 patch followed on October 9 with two bug fixes, and create_worktree requires allowAsync: true, returns a pending operationId the model polls, and defaults to the repository's remote default branch without fetching. Then the tool's description, the text the model reads, says: "The task stays in its existing checkout" source . The new tree exists on disk. The agent's shell is still in the folder you started it in. That is by design: the pull request says to keep the task's working directory unchanged. I haven't run 0.162 myself. Each behavior below links to the file it comes from, and the last part shows how to check it on your own clone. The 0.162.0 release went out on October 8, 2026 changelog . Its New Features section has one line on this: "Add tools for creating and listing managed Git worktrees from trusted local projects when the worktrees feature is enabled." The pull request behind it, 50148, names the tools: create worktree, get worktree creation status and list worktrees. The model gets them when three things hold: the worktrees feature is on, the project is a trusted local project, and attachment storage is available. The first condition holds unless you turned it off. In the 0.162.0 feature registry, worktrees is registered as Stage::Stable with default enabled: true. The CLI reference documents --disable
