# Cloudflare Launches Wallets That Let AI Agents Autonomously Hold and Spend Money

You can now reserve a handle like research.yourcompany.cloudflare.pay for an AI agent, the same way you'd claim a domain. That handle is tied to a real wallet. According to Cloudflare's own announcement, the system splits into two pieces: Account Wallets, which belong to the human or business that owns the Cloudflare account, and Virtual Wallets, which belong to the agents themselves and draw from whatever budget the account owner sets. Full funding and payment features are coming in the following months, but handle reservations opened this week.

Here's the mechanic that makes this work: an agent hits an API, gets a 402 Payment Required response instead of the data it wants, signs a stablecoin payment, resends the request, and gets served. That's the x402 protocol, and it settles in seconds with no account setup and no card on file. Cloudflare didn't invent it. Coinbase built x402 and handed it off to a nonprofit now stewarded by the Linux Foundation, the same body that oversees Linux and Kubernetes. Cloudflare is building the plumbing on top of it: agent identity, spend limits, and a wallet an agent can actually own.

The controls are the interesting part, honestly. An account owner can cap a Virtual Wallet at, say, $100 a week for AI inference, set a maximum transaction size, whitelist which services an agent is even allowed to pay, and get flagged when spending looks off. That's the whole pitch: let the agent transact, but keep a human's hand on the leash.

This isn't Cloudflare's first move into agent commerce. Back in October 2025, the company launched the Trusted Agent Protocol with Visa, a system that helps merchants tell a legitimate shopping agent from a bot scraping their site. Wallets is the natural next step: first prove the agent is who it says it is, then give it money to spend. Put those two together and Cloudflare is quietly building itself into a toll booth for a big share of machine-to-machine web traffic, given how much of the internet already routes through its network.

## A Bigger Payments Fight

The timing lines up with a much bigger fight over how AI agents actually pay. In July, the Linux Foundation launched the x402 Foundation with roughly 40 members, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and AWS, to govern the protocol as an open standard rather than a Coinbase product. Coinbase says x402 processed more than 169 million payments across 590,000 buyers and 100,000 sellers in its first year. Amazon has already wired x402 into its Bedrock AgentCore Payments service, where transactions settle in about 200 milliseconds on Coinbase's Base network for a fraction of a cent, and Stripe joined that same integration.

Visa isn't sitting still either. Its stablecoin settlement pilot has been scaling fast, spread across nine blockchains and more than 130 stablecoin-linked card programs in over 50 countries, according to Forbes. So agents now have two real rails to choose from: Visa and Mastercard's tokenized card networks, built for a world that already trusts cards, or Coinbase's x402 stablecoin rail, built for a world where an agent has no card and no bank relationship at all. Visa has said it's working with Coinbase to keep the two interoperable rather than let them fork into incompatible standards.

What Cloudflare adds to that fight is reach. Most companies building agent infrastructure have to pick a payment rail and hope developers show up. Cloudflare already sits in front of a huge share of the web's traffic, so when it says an agent can get a wallet and a handle just by using Cloudflare, it's removing the biggest friction point in agentic commerce: nobody has to build new infrastructure, they just flip a switch on infrastructure they're already running through.

Frankly, the risk here isn't technical. It's trust. Handing a piece of software a wallet and a weekly budget sounds fine until an agent finds a loophole in its own spending rules, or a compromised API key turns into a drained account. Cloudflare's anomaly detection is a start, not a solution, and the real test comes once real money, not test handles, starts moving through these wallets in volume.
