Cloud Storage Poll A community poll asking Haiku OS users about their preferred cloud storage services, focusing on privacy, security, and alignment with Haiku's philosophy. Respondents share varied setups, including self-hosted Nextcloud, encrypted services like Mega.nz and CryptPad, and commercial options like Dropbox and iCloud, with a strong consensus against using Google and other US Big Tech companies due to privacy concerns. The discussion highlights a preference for open-source, privacy-friendly alternatives, though one user notes that defining Haiku's philosophy remains contentious. I’m curious to know what the Haiku community prefers when it comes to online storage and cloud services. 1. Which cloud service do you currently use for backups, file syncing, or general storage? 2. Which one do you think is the most aligned with the philosophy of Haiku? 3. Which provider do you consider the most trustworthy and secure for personal data? 4. How many of you still use Google services or other big corporations despite the ongoing privacy concerns? I’d love to hear different opinions, technical setups, and experiences from the community I have a separate Haiku machine,a Fujitsu Celsius W520 workstation with 4x2TB Enterprise HDDs for backing up stuff from my other machines. In the past I also used Nextcloud which is open-source and privacy-friendly so that one aligns good with Haiku,I’d say ,but I prefer having my important data offline. If you don’t want to self-host,there are multiple companies that offer hosted Nextcloud. If I had to trust any big commercial cloud provider, there’s a good chance it would be Mega.nz,since that has end to end encryption for all files,a open-source client and the company is located in the EU Hungary . Never ever Google crap, obviously. And no other US Big Tech either, there are soooo many great alternatives that are not only more secure, but often also cheaper and have better features,so there’s not a single reason to stick to Big Tech other than being to lazy to even look which alternatives exist. I use CryptPad. It’s nice, feature-full, with a great community, and hasn’t let me down yet. On the minus side, it lacks native clients, and is pretty heavy on mobile browsers though it’s improved lately . That’s what I often use for writing documents. Their online editors are great, offer the basic functionality one needs but not too much,so that it doesn’t get confusing or bloated I pay Dropbox for a 2TB space. I have free-tier accounts on box.com, google drive, and icloud. There probably still is a Microsoft Whatever-They-Call-It-This-Month account with my name on it from my working days. Specifically for syncing with Haiku, I have nextcloud with a free-tier account on disroot.org. Considering we’ve just had a major unresolved flamewar over what the philosophy of Haiku is, I don’t think there is a sensible answer to that question. Privacy is the user’s responsibility. If a piece of information would be embarassing or dangerous, keep it away from the Internet. On my Mac, my main cloud storage is iCloud drive 2TB …obvious advantage since I am team iPhone. I also have the free tiers for Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox.
