The surveillance company's previously unreported prototype uses Elon Musk's AI to surface associates, social accounts, and personal details about facial recognition matches
Clearview AI, the facial recognition company that built its empire by scraping billions of photos from the public internet, has been quietly testing a new tool that layers generative AI on top of its surveillance platform. The prototype, called InquiryIQ, uses a model from Elon Musk’s xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot, to pull up associates, social media accounts, and other personal information about people identified through Clearview’s facial recognition system.
The tool, first reported by Wired, had not been previously disclosed to the public. It represents a meaningful escalation in what Clearview can offer its clients, who are exclusively government and law enforcement agencies under the terms of a 2022 settlement with the ACLU.
Rather than simply returning a facial match and pointing investigators toward a name, InquiryIQ would surface contextual intelligence. Associated individuals, linked social media profiles, and other open-source data could all be aggregated and presented alongside the initial identification.
Clearview’s existing algorithm already claims over 99% accuracy across demographics based on testing by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Clearview’s database now contains between 60 and 70 billion facial images, all harvested from publicly accessible web content.
In February 2026, Clearview secured a one-year contract worth $225,000 with US Customs and Border Protection, focused on tactical targeting and counter-network analysis.
The company restricts its customer base to vetted government and law enforcement agencies, a limitation imposed by its 2022 ACLU settlement. There are no public records, announcements, or regulatory filings about InquiryIQ or its integration with xAI’s Grok models, suggesting the tool is either in early internal testing or being piloted with a limited number of agencies.
