Claude now checks lawyers’ citations before a judge does Anthropic added a gallery of ready-made legal artifacts to Claude for Legal, led by a Cite check tool that compares a legal document against its sources and flags quotes that don't match, wrong page numbers and sources that don't support the claim. The launch comes days after a federal appeals court removed a Mississippi case from Judge Henry Wingate over AI errors in his orders, including a citation to a case that does not exist, and Anthropic published no accuracy figures for the tool. The gallery includes six Anthropic-built tools plus contributions from Harvey, PwC, Goodwin and Foley & Lardner, draws on more than 60 legal connectors added since May, and includes nine access-to-justice tools, five built by nonprofits Anthropic supported with Claude credits. Image: Anthropic Anthropic has added a gallery of ready-made legal tools https://claude.com/resources/articles/introducing-artifacts-for-legal-work to Claude, and the first one on its list goes after the mistake that keeps landing lawyers, and lately a judge, in trouble: quotes and citations that don’t match their sources. The tools are “artifacts”, Claude’s interactive mini-apps such as trackers and dashboards, built for Claude for Legal, the set of legal plugins and connectors Anthropic launched in May. Each opens with a worked example before a lawyer adds their own documents, and Anthropic says every answer links to its source. Six tools for the first pass Anthropic’s pitch is a division of labour: a legal professional brings the documents, “Claude completes the first pass, and a lawyer applies their judgment to the results.” The six tools it built itself are: - Cite check: compares a legal document with its sources and flags quotes that don’t match, wrong page numbers and sources that don’t support the claim. - Jurisdiction survey matrix: compares one topic, such as data breach notice rules, across states or countries in a table linked to the law. - Matter board: turns letters, emails or spreadsheets into one board of open matters, with owners and deadlines. - Playbook deviation board: flags contract clauses that differ from a company’s standard terms and sends them to whoever approves exceptions. - Regulatory horizon scan: maps upcoming regulations on a timeline, ranked by impact. - Tabular review: pulls chosen terms, such as non-compete clauses, from a pile of contracts into one table. The cite check arrives days after a federal appeals court took a Mississippi case away from Judge Henry Wingate https://madrobot.blog/2026/10/23/fifth-circuit-removes-judge-henry-wingate-ai-hallucinated-order-mississippi-dei-law/ over AI errors in his orders, including a case that doesn’t exist. Anthropic publishes no accuracy figures for the tool in its announcement. Harvey, PwC and big law firms build their own Outside builders are in the gallery too. Legal AI start-up Harvey made an intake tool that lets staff across a business send legal questions from inside Claude, answers routine ones from the legal team’s own guidance and routes the rest to a lawyer. PwC built a subpoena response drafter, and law firms Goodwin and Foley & Lardner added an AI governance benchmark and an obligations checker. Matt Zerweck, Harvey’s head of in-house product, said in the announcement that the questions are already coming: Business teams are already bringing their questions to Claude. Harvey meets them where they work, giving Legal the ability to set the rules, see what’s being asked, and step in to manage risk. Matt Zerweck, Head of In-House Product, Harvey The tools can draw on more than 60 legal connectors added since May, including Bloomberg Law, Filevine and Legora, and sharing settings support “ethical walls” between teams. Scott Stevenson, chief executive of the contract review start-up Spellbook, says in the announcement that close to 500,000 contracts a month now go through its Claude-powered service, a figure that hasn’t been independently checked. “Every minute spent on the math” Nine of the tools are aimed at access to justice, and five of those were built by nonprofits and public interest groups that Anthropic supported with Claude credits. Zealous made a Criminal Charge Reality Check that shows New York defence teams the likely sentencing range, Mobile Pathways a plain-language reader for immigration paperwork, and Rising for Justice tools that catch errors in landlords’ rent ledgers in Washington, DC. Scott Hechinger, who founded Zealous, said the aim was to give stretched defence teams their time back: There is never enough time, and every minute spent on the math is a minute not spent on who the person is beyond the charge. Scott Hechinger, founder and executive director, Zealous Anthropic is also funding law school programmes on building with Claude and has opened a waitlist for a Legal Ambassadors Program. Who can use it Legal teams can open the gallery inside Claude or start from Anthropic’s Claude for Legal page https://claude.com/solutions/legal . Anthropic files the launch under Claude Enterprise, gives no separate price and doesn’t say which countries it covers, though several access-to-justice tools are built around one US state’s or city’s law. Larger firms are pointed to partners including Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG and PwC. It is the company’s second business launch of the day, after it cut Claude’s price for US government buyers by 40% https://madrobot.blog/2026/10/28/anthropic-gsa-claude-40-percent-government-discount/ . Why it matters Lawyers are among the professionals most exposed to AI’s habit of inventing or misreading sources, and courts have started punishing it, so a tool that checks citations against the originals goes straight at the biggest reason firms hold back. The legal gallery also follows new Claude packages for financial advisors and nonprofits earlier this week, as Anthropic builds Claude out one profession at a time.
