Anthropic has made Claude for Government generally available to U.S. federal and state agencies, ending a public beta that began in July 2026. The service runs Claude in a FedRAMP High environment, the top tier of the U.S. government's cloud security program. Agencies pay no per-seat fees and buy usage in prepaid blocks under a hard spending cap.
Anthropic's own post and Unite.AI date the launch to September 30, 2026, while ExecutiveBiz reported the announcement on October 1. For agencies, the change is that Claude is now a product they can buy and deploy, not a trial.
FedRAMP is the federal program that checks whether a cloud service is secure enough for government data, and High is its top level. Any agency that requires FedRAMP High can use Claude for Government, Teresa Carlson, Anthropic's global head of public sector, told FedScoop. FedScoop reported in September that Anthropic's Fable 5.1 model had been added to the service.
Unite.AI lists the features: desktop file handling, skills, plugins, projects, Claude Code and Claude Cowork, plus admin controls. Agencies sign in through their own identity providers, with SCIM group mappings, a standard way to sync user groups from a directory.
Two more tools are coming. The Claude Code command-line tool and Claude for Microsoft 365 are entering early access in the same FedRAMP High environment, Anthropic's announcement says.
The service is designed around agency rules on records and approvals. Conversation history stays on agency-managed devices, according to Anthropic. Sensitive operations need approval from two people, and administrators get audit logs.
ExecutiveBiz reports that compliance exports carry usage-metering data only, not the content of conversations kept on agency devices.
Pricing avoids open-ended bills. "Agencies pay no seat fees for Claude for Government. Usage is bought in fixed increments under a hard not-to-exceed cap," Unite.AI quotes from the announcement.
| Buying detail | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Seat fees | None |
| Billing | Prepaid usage balances, bought in fixed increments |
| Spending limit | Hard not-to-exceed cap; admins can cap spend by dollar amount and by model |
| Where to buy | Directly from Anthropic, or through the GSA OneGov vehicle |
| OneGov deadline | Expires October 31, 2026, per ExecutiveBiz |
GSA OneGov is a government-wide buying program run by the General Services Administration. Agencies that want to use it have until the end of October, ExecutiveBiz reports.
Carlson's advice to agencies is to move in stages. FedScoop reports she favors a "crawl, walk, run" approach. Anthropic's road into government has not been smooth: in August, a judge ruled that the Pentagon's blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal retaliation.
If you build software for agencies, plan for Claude inside FedRAMP High. Contractors and in-house teams can now treat Claude as an approved option rather than a pilot. Check that your integrations work with the government environment's admin controls and single sign-on. Watch the October 31 OneGov deadline. Agencies that want to buy through GSA OneGov have weeks, not months. If you support an agency customer, help them decide before the vehicle expires.
Design for local chat history. Conversations stay on agency-managed devices, which affects records retention and how you back up or search past work. Ask records officers early how they want that handled.
Budget in prepaid blocks. With no seat fees and hard caps by dollar and by model, heavy users can run out mid-month. Set caps per team and per model, and watch usage so work does not stop when a block runs out.
Start with the early-access tools on low-risk work. Claude Code and Claude for Microsoft 365 are still in early access. Try them on internal tools before you use them on systems that hold sensitive data.
