The assumption that GitHub Copilot is the default AI coding tool is no longer accurate. JetBrains surveyed more than 15,000 professional developers between May and July 2026 and found Claude Code at 39% adoption — nearly double GitHub Copilot’s 21%. Six months earlier, in January 2026, those numbers were flipped: Copilot led at 29%, Claude Code sat at 18%. That reversal happened in roughly half a year.
