Claude Code auto memory: where MEMORY.md lives and how to turn it off Claude Code's auto memory feature, which writes notes to `~/.claude/projects//memory/` and loads the first 200 lines or 25KB of its `MEMORY.md` index at the start of every session, is on by default in local sessions as of Anthropic's v2.1.312 changelog on 28 October 2026. Users can disable it via the `/memory` toggle, `autoMemoryEnabled: false` in settings, or the `CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_AUTO_MEMORY=1` environment variable, and can relocate storage with `autoMemoryDirectory`, added in v2.1.74. The 25KB read cap arrived in v2.1.83, and since v2.1.210 a write that leaves the index over its limit returns an explicit error instead of silently truncating.
