Anthropic has added cross-session messaging to Claude Code, giving parallel coding sessions a way to pass findings, decisions and status updates between terminals. The feature is available in Claude Code version 2.1.224 or later on macOS and Linux, including Linux under WSL 2. It is not available on native Windows. [1]
Messages, not shared sessions #
The feature uses Claude’s ListAgents and SendMessage tools to find and contact another session. Messages contain plain text only: the receiving session does not automatically receive the sender’s conversation history, files or full context. Developers who want to move an entire conversation must resume that session instead. [1]
Sessions on the same machine communicate through per-session local sockets rather than Anthropic’s servers. Messages to sessions on another machine or to Claude Code on the web travel through Anthropic’s servers and are limited to replies to an existing exchange. [1]
Permission controls remain separate #
Anthropic’s design keeps permission boundaries at the session level. A message from another Claude session cannot approve a tool request, change configuration or substitute for the user’s consent. Incoming messages can be configured to be accepted, held for approval or refused, and the isolatePeerMachines setting can require approval before messages leave the local machine. [1]
Anthropic’s documentation does not identify a separate subscription tier for cross-session messaging. Claude Code supports Anthropic account authentication for Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise users, as well as API-key-based commercial use, subject to the feature’s platform and provider restrictions.
