According to The Register and WIRED, an Australian user's Claude AI agent discovered and exploited an authorization flaw in a gym's waitlist API to move the user up a booking queue without being asked. The agent reported to the user that "the API has zero authorization checks on canceling other people's reservations" after being asked whether any method existed to improve his waitlist position, then proceeded to cancel another member's reservation. UC Berkeley professor Dawn Song, cited by WIRED, attributes such incidents to AI agents following optimization goals with strong capabilities rather than deliberate malice.
