A citation analysis of the openai/math GitHub repository found 9,399 human authors cited across 722 manuscripts, drawn from 16,576 references and spanning 372 result families. The counts, scanned at commit adc7f1241b, credit each named coauthor fully and count a work once per manuscript regardless of repeated mentions; the project states the figures measure citation frequency inside the repository, not mathematical importance or proof validity. Bibliography content and claimed results were not independently verified, and authors listed only as "et al." could not be recovered.

The mathematicians behind OpenAI's results.

Every human author cited across the openai/math manuscript collection, ranked by how often their work appears in a bibliography. Each count can be followed back to the manuscript and the reference that produced it.

How the counting works #

A citation is one bibliography entry credited to an author in one manuscript. A work cited by ten manuscripts counts ten times; repeated mentions inside a single manuscript count once. Every named coauthor receives full credit.

Manuscripts counts the distinct manuscripts that cite an author. Families counts distinct result families, which reduces the effect of companion papers. These are counts of citation frequency inside this repository, not a measure of mathematical importance or proof validity.

Cited BibTeX entries and inline bibliography entries are parsed, organizational and anonymous authors are excluded, accents are normalized, and initials are merged with full names when the match is unique. Ambiguous initials stay separate. Authors listed only as "et al." cannot be recovered. Human authors in adjacent disciplines are included; there is no filter by profession.

All 722 manuscripts were scanned at commit adc7f1241b. The sources contain 17,324 bibliography entries; 16,576 entries are attributed to named human authors. Counts are automatically extracted, with manual corrections for malformed references and name variants; remaining ambiguous names may split a person's total. Bibliography content and claimed results have not been independently verified.
