Cisco just made its biggest bet yet on becoming the plumbing of the AI era. The company announced a partnership with Supermicro on August 25 to integrate NVIDIA-based AI compute systems into its Secure AI Factory, creating what amounts to a one-stop shop for enterprises looking to deploy AI infrastructure without stitching together five different vendors’ hardware.
The pre-validated systems, which combine Supermicro’s high-density servers with Cisco’s networking, security, and observability stack, are expected to hit availability in October 2026.
What Cisco is actually building #
The Secure AI Factory first debuted in March 2025 at NVIDIA’s GTC event in San Jose, positioning Cisco’s networking and security expertise as the connective tissue for AI workloads. By March 2026, the platform had expanded to include advanced edge computing capabilities and multi-agent AI functionalities.
Now, with Supermicro in the picture, Cisco is adding the raw muscle. Supermicro brings liquid-cooled and air-cooled server designs purpose-built for NVIDIA GPUs. Rather than asking customers to figure out how Supermicro boxes talk to Cisco switches, the partnership delivers pre-validated configurations where everything is tested to work together out of the gate.
Cisco President Jeetu Patel framed the ambition in characteristically broad strokes: “Think about us as being the critical infrastructure for the AI era.”
Why Supermicro, and why now #
Supermicro has a long-standing relationship with NVIDIA as a supplier of certified servers, specializing in GPU-dense rack configurations optimized for NVIDIA’s accelerators. Its liquid cooling technology has become increasingly important as AI chips push past the thermal limits of traditional air-cooled data centers.
Partnering with Supermicro solves that gap without forcing Cisco to become a server manufacturer itself. Supermicro handles what it does best (cramming GPUs into racks and keeping them cool), while Cisco handles what it does best (connecting those racks, securing them, and monitoring them).
The competitive landscape is getting crowded #
Cisco isn’t operating in a vacuum here. Dell Technologies has been aggressively pushing its own AI Factory solutions with NVIDIA. HPE merged with Juniper Networks to strengthen its combined AI infrastructure play. And cloud hyperscalers like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud continue to offer the path of least resistance for companies that would rather rent AI compute than build it.
Cisco positions itself as a neutral entity, adaptable to different AI deployment models and architectures, which may include hyperscalers, on-premises solutions, or hybrid environments. Most Fortune 500 companies already run on Cisco switches, routers, and firewalls, lowering switching costs for customers who can plug the AI Factory into existing Cisco-powered data centers.
For Supermicro, the partnership provides distribution through Cisco’s global sales force and channel partner network, effectively embedding Supermicro hardware in Cisco’s validated designs across the enterprise market.
