# Cigna projects $200M in savings from AI-powered predictive health tools over three years

The health insurer is betting that catching cancer and heart disease earlier with machine learning will cut costs and extend clinical support to 20% more customers.

Cigna Healthcare is rolling out an expansion of its AI-enabled predictive tools across care management programs, projecting $200 million in medical cost reductions over the next three years. The initiative focuses on catching complex health conditions, including cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, and high-risk pregnancies, before they escalate into expensive hospital stays.

For engaged customers, that translates to an estimated $2,000 in average annual savings.

## What the AI actually does

The system works by feeding predictive models into clinician workflows. Machine learning algorithms flag patients who show patterns consistent with developing serious conditions, and then Cigna’s clinical staff, over 1,250 of them, reach out proactively through phone, text, email, and digital platforms.

Cigna emphasizes that the AI assists rather than replaces human judgment. Predictive models surface the data, but clinical decision-making stays in human hands.

The expansion will extend clinical support to approximately 20% more customers than current programs reach.

## The numbers behind early detection

Among patients who engage early with clinical outreach, avoidable inpatient stays have dropped by 42%. Customer satisfaction among those who participate sits at 95%.

Breast cancer is being identified roughly 55 days sooner than it otherwise would be. Colorectal cancer gets caught about 46 days earlier. Lung cancer detection improves by approximately 37 days.

## Where Cigna fits in the AI healthcare race

Cigna isn’t operating in a vacuum here. UnitedHealth and CVS Health have both been deploying AI technologies to address rising healthcare costs.

The initiative has been building since Katya Andresen joined Cigna as chief data, digital and AI officer in September 2021. Since then, the company has been layering AI capabilities across its operations, including the launch of the myCigna AI assistant in mid-2025.

“How do I use AI?” is the question Andresen says the emergence of generative AI led many to ask themselves. For Cigna, the answer has been decidedly practical: don’t chase the flashiest application, chase the one that moves the cost curve.
