A Chinese startup has again rocked the world of artificial intelligence after its latest model’s performance was found very close to Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol, the best models in the world. Moonshot, the company behind Kimi K3, was modest enough to state that it still trailed slightly behind though at least one benchmark of its AI model puts it ahead of the others.
Kimi K3 has a million token context windows and AI vision. Fable and Sol have similar capabilities but what makes it different is cost and access. Moonshot says it will be open weight, which means users can download and even modify it if required. Additionally, it is at a third of what Anthropic is charging for Fable.
Demand for Kimi K3 was so huge that within days, Moonshot had to suspend new subscriptions. Kimi K3 makes it clear that China is very much on US’ heels in the AI race, and with its AI being cheaper, it is only a matter of time before greater global adoption follows. Right now, Chinese AI companies are stymied by access to Nvidia’s GPUs that the US is curtailing but the moat also won’t last for long.
