[Trinity Audio](//trinityaudio.ai)player ready...SAN JOSE — Chick-fil-A is planning a new San Jose restaurant slated to be developed on an empty parcel that currently is part of a surface parking lot next to a regional mall.

The restaurant envisioned at that site involves a [Chick-fil-A dining establishment](https://www.mercurynews.com/2024/01/24/chick-fil-a-restaurant-is-being-proposed-near-downtown/) that would be developed from the ground up at 4785 Hamilton Ave. in southwest San Jose, documents on file with the city’s Planning Department show.

The new Chick-fil-A would total about 4,800 square feet and occupy what is now a surface parking area adjacent to Westgate Center, a value-oriented regional mall, according to the San Jose planning files.

The restaurant is expected to offer indoor dining, a small patio dining area, and site improvements, the city documents show. The city planning files also show a drive-through component.

The proposed Chick-fil-A parcel and the adjacent mall are both owned by an affiliate of Federal Realty Investment Trust, Santa Clara Count. By happenstance, Federal Realty is also the principal owner of Santana Row, a destination mixed-use neighborhood in west San Jose.

Chick-fil-A has become active with proposals for projects in San Jose in recent years. The restaurant chain has also been accused of promoting [anti-gay](https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/04/09/san-joses-lgtbq-community-rallies-against-airport-chick-fil-a/) causes. In 2019, members of San Jose’s LGBTQ+ community rallied against plans for a Chick-fil-A at San Jose International Airport.

In 2023, the [fast-food restaurant company paid $4.5 million](https://www.mercurynews.com/2023/10/11/chick-fil-a-san-jose-real-estate-store-retail-restaurant-build-develop/) for part of a surface parking lot at the corner of Silver Creek Road and East Capitol Expressway in San Jose. Chick-fil-A developed a new restaurant on the site, which is near a Target store.

A few months later, in early 2024, a [Chick-fil-A restaurant was proposed for a San Jose location at 1301 West San Carlos St.](https://www.mercurynews.com/2024/01/24/chick-fil-a-restaurant-is-being-proposed-near-downtown/) next to Race Street. This location is west of the city’s downtown and would replace some existing commercial structures.

In late 2024, plans for a [Chick-fil-A emerged at 4400 Stevens Creek Blvd.](https://www.sanjoseca.gov/your-government/departments-offices/planning-building-code-enforcement/planning-division/environmental-planning/environmental-review/active-eirs/4300-stevens-creek-blvd-mixed-use-project) next to and near several car dealerships in that area of San Jose. This proposal involves a new restaurant totaling 5,200 square feet.
