OpenAI is turning workplace connections into a personalization layer, making ChatGPT Work more useful for daily communication and harder to replace with a generic assistant.
OpenAI added a writing-style personalization feature to ChatGPT Work on September 7th, allowing the product to study material in connected workplace apps and reproduce a user's preferred phrases, capitalization habits and sign-off.
The feature can draw from Gmail, Google Drive, Slack and SharePoint, OpenAI said in a two-post thread. Once configured, the resulting style applies to messages generated by ChatGPT Work on both web and mobile. Setup is available on the web to customers on all paid ChatGPT plans.
Users can start the process through OpenAI's setup page or by opening Settings > Personalization > Writing style. The source connections remain subject to the availability and permissions attached to each user's account and workspace.
Workplace context becomes a personal style profile
The release pushes ChatGPT Work beyond retrieving facts from company systems. OpenAI is using the same connections that locate a document or summarize a Slack discussion to shape how the product communicates on a user's behalf.
That distinction matters for routine work. A drafting assistant can retrieve the correct quarterly figures and still produce an update that sounds foreign to the person sending it. OpenAI's feature targets the smaller patterns that make workplace writing recognizable: recurring phrases, formatting preferences, capitalization and the way a person ends a message.
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Work as a product that can pull project updates from multiple systems, identify risks and prepare recurring reviews. Its operations product page lists Gmail, Google Drive, Slack and SharePoint among the services that can provide context. Writing-style personalization turns those connections into a behavioral advantage: the more relevant material a user authorizes, the closer Work can get to producing a usable first draft without a separate style prompt.
The product bet is straightforward. OpenAI wants ChatGPT Work to become the interface through which employees read company information, prepare decisions and send the resulting communication. Personal style reduces one of the visible signs that a draft came from a general-purpose assistant, while increasing the value of keeping workplace accounts connected.
Access still follows app and workspace permissions
The feature's reach depends on the underlying connections. OpenAI's documentation for apps in ChatGPT says availability can vary by plan, region, workspace, role, model and interface. Workspace administrators can also determine which apps employees may use and what actions those apps can perform.
Connected apps do not give ChatGPT access beyond the permissions granted to the linked account. A Google Drive or Slack connection can reference material the user is authorized to reach, while organizational settings can impose additional restrictions. OpenAI also separates app permissions from broader personalization controls such as Memory.
That separation is important because OpenAI uses the word "learn" in describing the writing feature. The announcement refers to adapting responses to a user's style, rather than training a new general model on that person's inbox or documents. In its Google app data controls FAQ, OpenAI says data accessed directly from connected Google apps is not used to train its generalized models except in specified cases, including content submitted as feedback or manually copied into a conversation. The same documentation says eligible connected information may support personalization when Memory is enabled.
For OpenAI, writing style gives connected workplace data another job. Gmail, Drive, Slack and SharePoint can supply the substance of a response and now help determine its voice. The result is a more personal drafting product built from the work material users and their employers choose to connect.
