OpenAI's new enterprise tool lets users query company data and build interactive dashboards using plain English, no SQL required
OpenAI just made a play for every analyst, ops manager, and C-suite exec who’s ever stared at a SQL query and thought, “I wish I could just ask this in English.” The company launched its Data agent inside ChatGPT Work on September 10, 2026, giving enterprise users the ability to pull insights, generate dashboards, and trigger follow-up actions across their company’s data stack using nothing more than natural language.
What the Data agent actually does #
The core pitch is straightforward: connect your existing data sources, ask questions in plain English, and get interactive dashboards and insights back. No data migration required.
The Data agent plugs into major platforms including Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, Databricks, and Snowflake. It acts as an orchestration layer, meaning it reaches across these systems to pull and synthesize information without requiring companies to centralize everything into a single repository first.
OpenAI has been eating its own cooking on this one. The company disclosed back in January 2026 that its internal data agent had been operational across its teams, handling complex queries over more than 600 petabytes of data spanning roughly 70,000 datasets.
ChatGPT Work: the bigger picture #
The Data agent doesn’t exist in isolation. It’s a module inside ChatGPT Work, the enterprise-focused agentic workspace OpenAI rolled out in July 2026. ChatGPT Work is built on GPT-5.6 and is designed to handle multi-step tasks that span applications like Slack, Gmail, and now data warehouses.
The competitive landscape #
OpenAI isn’t operating in a vacuum. Anthropic launched Cowork around the same time in July 2026, targeting a similar slice of the enterprise productivity market. The philosophical difference is notable: while both tools aim to help workers accomplish complex tasks, OpenAI’s Data agent leans heavily into orchestration, connecting to data where it already lives rather than requiring companies to pipe everything into a new system.
Google, Microsoft, and Salesforce are all building their own AI-powered analytics layers. Google has Gemini integrated across its Cloud and Workspace products. Microsoft’s Copilot is embedded in the Office suite and Azure ecosystem. But OpenAI’s advantage is platform agnosticism. A company using Redshift for its data warehouse and Slack for communication doesn’t need to be all-in on one cloud provider to benefit.
OpenAI’s internal deployment across 600-plus petabytes suggests the orchestration model can scale. Whether it works as cleanly in the messy, heterogeneous data environments of Fortune 500 companies remains the open question.
