OpenAI's voice mode now runs on Astra, Sol, and Luna models with 50% cheaper API pricing and expanded plugin connectivity across all plans
OpenAI just turned ChatGPT Voice into something closer to a full operating system for your mouth. The latest update brings plugin support, three new GPT-6 models, and a global rollout that makes the whole package available to users worldwide through the most recent app version.
What actually changed #
The headline features break down into three pillars: new models, plugin integration, and expanded access.
On the model front, ChatGPT Voice now runs on GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol, and GPT-6 Luna. Astra sits at the top of the stack as OpenAI’s most capable model for coding and complex reasoning. Sol and Luna slot in below as faster, cheaper alternatives designed for everyday use cases that still benefit from next-gen architecture.
As of September 10, 2026, Pro plan users gained the ability to select GPT-5.6 Sol or GPT-6 Astra for voice interactions. The system runs on top of the existing GPT-Live architecture, which means the conversational fluidity users have come to expect stays intact even as the underlying intelligence gets a substantial upgrade.
Then on September 22, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna officially launched with API pricing that undercuts their predecessors by half. Sol comes in at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Luna is even leaner at $0.10/$0.50. For context, those Sol prices represent a 50% reduction compared to GPT-5.6.

The plugin expansion is arguably just as significant. ChatGPT’s plugin architecture now supports multi-account connectivity across all plans, meaning users can wire up multiple third-party services and switch between them during voice sessions. By late September, this broader plugin rollout reached every tier, including free users.
Usage limits and access tiers #
OpenAI adjusted the daily usage caps for GPT-Live to accommodate the new models. Plus subscribers now get up to 3 hours of voice interaction per day. Pro users paying $100 per month receive 15 hours.
Luna, the lightest model in the GPT-6 family, is accessible to Free and Go tier users through the desktop app. The desktop app itself became a more prominent part of the ecosystem after gaining GPT-Live support in July 2026.
The competitive picture #
The 50% API price cut for Sol and Luna is the kind of aggressive pricing move that tends to reshape developer behavior. A customer service bot running on Luna at $0.10 per million input tokens is an order of magnitude cheaper than what similar capabilities cost eighteen months ago.
The tiered model approach, with Astra for heavy reasoning, Sol for balanced performance, and Luna for lightweight tasks, gives developers granular control over their spending. Route simple queries to Luna, escalate complex ones to Sol, and reserve Astra for the tasks that genuinely need frontier-level intelligence.
