OpenAI has quietly shipped a feature that prompt engineers and ChatGPT power users have been improvising workarounds for since 2023: the ability to share a single prompt as a clickable link.
The new “Share prompt” option, which started appearing in the ChatGPT web app around August 17, generates a link from any individual user message. When someone clicks that link, ChatGPT opens with the prompt pre-loaded into the input composer, ready to run. No copy-pasting, no screenshots, no pasting an entire conversation transcript into a Slack channel like it’s 2024.
How it works and why it matters #
The mechanics are straightforward. Users can select any message they’ve sent in a ChatGPT conversation and hit a “Share prompt” button. That generates a unique URL pointing to the specific prompt, not the full conversation thread. Recipients who open the link get the prompt dropped directly into their ChatGPT composer, where they can tweak it or fire it off as-is.
OpenAI also built in direct sharing to three platforms: X, LinkedIn, and Reddit. There’s a copy-link option too, covering the basics for anyone who prefers to distribute prompts through email, Discord, or wherever else people swap AI workflows.
The distinction between sharing a prompt and sharing an entire conversation is more meaningful than it sounds. ChatGPT has supported shared conversation links since at least 2023, letting users create read-only snapshots of full dialogues. That feature was useful for showing off results but clunky for collaboration. If you wanted someone to try your exact prompt with their own context, you had to describe it separately or hope they’d dig through the shared transcript to find the relevant input.
A tool built for the prompt engineering crowd #
Before this feature, the workarounds were functional but messy. Screenshots captured the text but not the interactivity. Copying prompts into shared documents preserved the words but lost the one-click convenience of launching directly into ChatGPT. Community forums and social media were full of prompt templates shared as plain text, requiring manual re-entry every time.
Development on the feature reportedly began around April 2026, with the public rollout landing roughly four months later. That timeline suggests a deliberate testing period rather than a rushed launch, which tracks with OpenAI’s general pattern of gradually expanding features across its user tiers, from free accounts up through Plus, Team, and Enterprise plans.
OpenAI’s documentation hasn’t fully caught up to the feature yet, which is typical for incremental product updates.
