ChatGPT now lets users create custom iMessage and WhatsApp stickers

OpenAI announced that ChatGPT users can now create custom stickers from their photos and export them directly to iMessage or WhatsApp, with support for transparent backgrounds and style remixing. The feature, which also allows saving stickers to photos, requires WhatsApp users to export at least three stickers due to Meta's policy. In tests, uploading an image with the prompt 'Create an iMessage sticker' generated a transparent-background asset and even outpainted the image to restore cropped content.

Users can turn any photo into an iMessage or WhatsApp sticker, or use images as inspiration to create custom packs. Here are the details.

’Turn any photo, idea, or inside joke into a custom sticker pack’ #

A few days ago, references found in code showed that OpenAI was working on a feature that would let users create custom stickers in ChatGPT and export them directly to WhatsApp.

Today, OpenAI officially announced the feature, adding that it works with iMessage as well as WhatsApp and supports creating images with transparent backgrounds.

Here’s OpenAI’s announcement:

With the new feature, users can upload one or several images from their library. From there, they can ask ChatGPT to turn each image into a sticker, remix them into multiple stickers, and add or remove elements.

Users can also transfer a style from another image or simply describe the style they want in a prompt.

Once the sticker is done, users can tap a “Add to chat apps” button, which lets them export to supported chat apps. Currently, the options are:

  • iMessage
  • WhatsApp (Can only export 3 or more stickers)
  • Save to photos

It’s worth noting that WhatsApp’s three-sticker minimum is a requirement set by Meta rather than a ChatGPT limitation.

In our tests, simply up an image with the prompt “Create an iMessage sticker” was enough to generate an asset with a transparent background and even outpaint the image, restoring the top of the subject’s head that had been cropped out of the original.

After selecting “iMessage” from the “Add to chat apps” menu, the sticker appeared in a dedicated ChatGPT section within the Stickers carousel in Messages.
