OpenAI has launched a new version of ChatGPT designed specifically for teenagers, putting more focus on learning, healthy AI use, and age-appropriate safety. Called ChatGPT for Teens, the experience is designed for users between 13 and 17 and automatically applies stronger protections for younger users.
The system will use age estimation to determine whether someone is under 18. Users who identify themselves as being between 13 and 17 will also be placed into the teen experience for ChatGPT automatically. This means younger users won’t have to manually activate the additional protections.
OpenAI has designed the experience to enhance education #
One of the biggest changes is the focus on education. OpenAI wants ChatGPT to help teenagers understand subjects rather than simply provide answers to homework questions. Study Mode can guide students through problems step by step, while quizzes and learning visualizations give them additional ways to practice and check their understanding.

OpenAI is also adding responsible homework reminders. If ChatGPT detects that a student may be trying to get a quick answer instead of learning the material, it can redirect them toward a more interactive approach. A new Study Hours feature can also make Study Mode the default during selected times, helping students build a regular study routine.
How the new version is safeguarding teens using ChatGPT #
Safety is another major part of the new experience. ChatGPT for Teens introduces stronger protections around areas such as self-harm, eating disorders, violence, dangerous activities, and explicit sexual or graphic content. OpenAI says these safeguards are based on its under-18 safety principles and developmental research.
Another factor is “simple customization options” such as accent colors and voice variations. OpenAI wants the new teen-friendly version of the chatbot not to blur the line “between a useful tool and a human relationship” – a factor which should prevent teens from forming an unwanted bond with AI. This anthropomorphic effect may otherwise become a detriment.
“Every student should know how AI actually works and be able to question the technology, catch its mistakes, and know when to stop trusting it. Give them that foundation, and AI becomes less a force shaping their future and instead something they can question, shape, and create on their own.”
Karim Meghji, CEO of CodeAI
The company is trying to make sure ChatGPT does not become a replacement for real-world relationships. “Break reminders encourage teens to step away” from the service, while the system is designed to avoid romantic language, emotional dependence, or suggesting that ChatGPT has feelings or consciousness.
Parents also get additional controls when their account is linked to a teen’s account. They can manage selected settings, set Quiet Hours, and receive safety notifications in certain high-risk situations. OpenAI is also expanding notifications related to eating disorders while limiting the information shared with parents.
Alongside the launch, OpenAI announced a partnership with CodeAI aimed at helping students develop AI literacy. The initiative will focus on teaching young people how AI works, how to question its answers, and how to use the technology responsibly.
