OpenAI recently released the Linux counterpart of the ChatGPT/Codex Desktop app. As someone who recently switched from Windows to Linux, I was pretty excited to finally move from the CLI to the familiar interface I got used to while I was on Windows. The CLI is good, don't get me wrong but GUIs are made for a reason and I found it made my experience smoother.
However, when GPT-6-Astra was launched, I was frustrated at first for not having received it for days after its release. I eventually figured out that my app was out of date and I have to update it. I realized that the Windows version of the app had an update checker built-in that notified me of the updates. When I checked the Linux app, I found that there was no update checker. I am sure OpenAI will fix this in the long run. For now, I built myself a small utility that notifies me whenever there is an update available for the app.
It checks the native operating system's package manager for chatgpt package upgrades and notifies when one is available. It lets me do one-click installs and roll backs and I recently added a control panel that lets me tweak the settings and run upgrades and roll backs at will!
