# ChatGPT can now read and reply to Apple Messages on Mac

OpenAI's latest macOS plugin lets the AI assistant search, summarize, and draft replies across iMessage, SMS, and RCS conversations.

OpenAI just gave ChatGPT the keys to your text messages. The company’s macOS desktop app now includes a plugin that integrates directly with Apple Messages, allowing the AI to read, search, summarize, and even send replies on your behalf.

The update, released on August 20, 2026, works across iMessage, SMS, and RCS messaging formats. It’s available to all ChatGPT subscription tiers, including free users, though there’s one important guardrail: actually sending a message requires explicit user approval each time.

## How the integration works

The new Messages plugin operates within both Work and Codex modes of the ChatGPT desktop app. In practical terms, that means you can ask ChatGPT to pull up a conversation thread, find a specific message from weeks ago, or generate a reply to that group chat you’ve been ignoring since Tuesday.

The plugin is restricted to Apple silicon Macs. If you’re still running an Intel-based machine, this feature isn’t available to you. There’s also no current indication that OpenAI plans to expand this particular integration to iOS.

OpenAI has published documentation around the plugin’s privacy controls, including options for users to revoke access at any time.

## Building on the Apple relationship

This isn’t OpenAI’s first dance with Apple. The two companies have been tightening their integration since Apple Intelligence launched alongside iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. That partnership initially brought ChatGPT capabilities into Siri and Apple’s system-wide Writing Tools, giving users AI-powered text generation and editing without leaving native apps.

This update arrived just days after OpenAI rolled out “Computer History,” an optional feature that enhances ChatGPT’s contextual awareness by tracking app and website activity on the user’s Mac.

## Privacy questions and competitive dynamics

When you grant ChatGPT access to your Messages app, every person you’ve texted is indirectly opted in. OpenAI’s privacy documentation addresses user-side controls, but it doesn’t resolve the consent asymmetry for the people on the other end of those conversations.

The Apple silicon requirement also quietly reinforces Apple’s hardware upgrade cycle, giving users running older Intel Macs another reason to consider a new machine.
