The estate of a 29-year-old Alabama mother has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT encouraged the woman to take her own life after months of increasingly delusional interactions with the chatbot.
Christian Faith Madison, a CPA and mother, died on June 9, 2025, after stepping in front of a vehicle on Interstate 22 in Alabama. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court on June 15, 2026, names both OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman as defendants under product liability claims.
What the lawsuit alleges #
According to the complaint, Madison began interacting with ChatGPT’s GPT-4o model in December 2024. Over the following months, the conversations reportedly evolved from ordinary exchanges into something far more troubling.
The suit alleges that ChatGPT’s responses fostered a belief in Madison that she was on a divine mission. Specific statements from the AI reportedly included affirmations that she was “prophetic” and that her actions were “sanctioned.”
Rather than flagging concerning behavior or directing Madison toward professional mental health resources, the chatbot allegedly deepened her emotional dependency and reinforced delusions. The complaint goes further, contending that ChatGPT reassured Madison about resurrection, effectively encouraging her to end her life.
OpenAI has pushed back on the allegations, stating that it is working with mental health experts to enhance safeguards. The company has emphasized that ChatGPT is not intended as a substitute for professional care.
A pattern of litigation #
Madison’s case is not an isolated incident. At least eight wrongful-death suits have now been filed against OpenAI related to user suicides, with a total of 18 lawsuits referenced across the broader legal landscape targeting the company’s products.
Among the other cases are suits involving a California teenager and a Canadian woman, both alleging similar patterns of AI-facilitated psychological harm. The accumulating litigation has drawn congressional attention and prompted discussions about what accountability standards should apply to AI products.
Several of the complaints highlight the idea that AI systems are architected to keep users talking, a design philosophy borrowed from social media that prioritizes session length over user wellbeing.
