Carl Sagan estate sues Luma AI for use of Sagan clip in ad for Ray 3.14 The estate of Carl Sagan has filed a lawsuit against Luma AI, alleging that the company used an 8-second clip of Sagan from the 1980 episode 'The Lives of the Stars' of Cosmos: A Personal Voyage in an advertisement for its Ray 3.14 model without permission. The complaint states that Luma AI argued the use was de minimis. A new lawsuit was filed against Luma AI. This one involves a video ad fro Luma’s Ray 3.14 model. The ad allegedly included a portion from the TV series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage , episode 9: “The Lives of the Stars,” broadcast on November 23, 1980. In that episode, Sagan said a famous line, in an 8-second clip: “ If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe. ” The complaint alleged that Luma AI took the position that the use was de minimis.
