This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass CanopyStride is an offline-first, open-source AI agent designed to get runners and walkers off their couches and onto scenic, tree-covered paths—without staring at phone screens along the trail.
Instead of forcing you to check turn-by-turn phone navigation during an outdoor run, CanopyStride converts runner prompts into structured .gpx route files optimized for high tree canopy density, park trails, and peak autumn foliage in under 60 seconds. You export the route directly to your GPS smartwatch or phone, put the screen away, and head out the door.
It is built for outdoor enthusiasts, runners, and remote workers looking to minimize screen time during their workouts while discovering greener, safer routes.

CanopyStride is built using Streamlit for a responsive, dark-themed UI, PyDeck for interactive geospatial mapping across multiple base layers(Light, Dark, and ESRI Satellite imagery), and OpenRouteService for dynamic routing algorithms.
*Circular Closed-Loop Routing Engine: Built on open-source spatial data from OpenStreetMap via OpenRouteService, CanopyStride calculates closed-loop walking and running paths from any starting coordinate without requiring a fixed destination.
*Browser-Aware Geolocation: Integrates automatic location detection so users can generate routes relative to where they stand.
*Screen-Free Outdoor Execution: Translates coordinates into standard .gpx vector streams, enabling one-click exports directly to Garmin, Strava, Apple Watch, or handheld GPS units.
Open innovation and open-source spatial datasets (like OpenStreetMap) make CanopyStride possible by giving developers transparent access to global road and trail networks without restrictive paywalls or proprietary walled gardens.
Utilizing open-source tools allows CanopyStride to remain modular and flexible—letting users customize route calculations, select open map tiles (such as ESRI World Imagery), and export open-standard GPX files freely. Closed mapping APIs often keep routing data trapped inside proprietary ecosystems; open innovation ensures that runners and walkers truly own their navigation data and can use it on any device they choose.
