The Problem No One Taught Us to Solve Mental health content is everywhere. It arrives on your feed before you've asked for it, sounds credible enough to act on, and rarely tells you how to verify it. We were taught to be sceptical of obvious misinformation. Nobody prepared us for content that is fluent, warm, structured, and subtly wrong. To understand what reliable mental health content actually looks like from the inside, I spoke with Emma Loker, a licensed therapist specialized in child and adolescent therapy https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/therapy , and CEO of PsychWrite, who works at the intersection of clinical accuracy and digital communication. What Google Is Checking I asked Emma what Google looks for when deciding whether a piece of mental health content is trustworthy. Her answer was more concrete than most readers would expect. "First and foremost, Google checks whether the information is accurate and evidence-based," she told me. "Any factual errors, or a lack of research, affect trustworthiness. Google also checks that the author is a mental health expert, their expertise, experience, and qualifications. If these details aren't present, the piece loses credibility points." It isn't only about the content itself. The website's overall reputation factors in too. And original content that adds clinical value, rather than restating what already exists, earns further trust. "Using clinical experience and judgement can help your content stand apart," Emma says. "AI can produce information that's been written hundreds of times before. That's no longer enough." The Signals Worth Learning to Spot When I asked Emma what a regular reader, with no SEO background, could actually look out for, her list was specific enough to be immediately useful. Watch for: vague, flowing language that sounds meaningful but contains few concrete details. Watch for references to studies that aren't linked, don't exist, or have unusual-looking URLs. Watch for phrases like "In today's world" or "In our digital age," or a heavy reliance on words like "foster," "navigate," and "empower." Watch for information repeated across the same piece, slightly reworded, as though padding out a word count. "The structure also gives it away," Emma adds. "Lots of bulleted lists, one after another. Metaphors stacked on metaphors. And 'It's not this, it's this' phrasing, where a complex idea is presented as a simple binary without any actual evidence." What AI Content Looks Like Emma gave me a direct comparison that I think is the clearest demonstration of the difference. An AI version of a sentence about anxiety https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/anxiety might read: "In today's increasingly complex world, anxiety has quietly become one of the most prevalent mental health concerns affecting individuals from all walks of life." It is grammatically correct. It sounds professional. It says almost nothing. A human, evidence-based version of the same idea would look closer to: "Anxiety disorders affect many of us. Stats show that 359 million people manage an anxiety disorder day-to-day WHO, 2025 . Fortunately, these conditions don't have to be a life sentence. Therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes can help." The difference isn't style. It's specificity, evidence, and the presence of a real source. Why This Is Harder Than It Sounds Part of what makes this difficult is that most of us aren't reliable detectors. Research published in 2025 found that both human evaluators and AI detection tools correctly identified AI-generated text only slightly better than chance, with humans reaching a recognition rate of 57% Fiedler & Döpke, 2025 . The more a human has revised AI output, the harder it becomes to identify. The problem extends to AI assistants themselves. A 2025 study in JMIR Mental Health found that nearly one in five citations generated by GPT-4o in mental health research were entirely fabricated, and 45.4% of the remaining citations contained errors Linardon et al., 2025 . And in February 2026, a Guardian investigation found that Google's AI Overviews, shown to 2 billion people monthly, had served false and dangerous mental health advice on conditions including psychosis https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/psychosis and eating disorders. Mind, the mental health charity, described some of the AI-generated responses as "very dangerous advice that could lead people to avoid seeking help," and promptly launched a year-long global inquiry into AI and mental health as a result. One Habit Worth Building I asked Emma what single habit she would teach someone scrolling for mental health advice late at night. "Check the credibility markers," she said. "Ensure any advice was written by someone trained to offer it: a therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, or other mental health expert. Check for a reference section or that the page cites research. If it doesn't, and there are no sources in sight, it's likely not evidence-based." Her second suggestion: cross-check. If multiple reputable websites make the same claims and cite relevant research, they're likely accurate. If a piece stands alone, that's worth noticing.
