What I found that's new 1. Satoshi's computers ran on UK time Every computer has a clock and a time-zone setting, and many files quietly record them. An email notes the sender's local time, and a zip archive notes when each file inside it was saved. I collected every timestamp like this that I could tie to Satoshi's own computers. Several kinds of timestamp are consistent with UK time in 2009 and 2010. They may share the same computer or configuration, so they are not independent votes for a location. The first-release result is also less precise than the later email and ZIP evidence. - Email verified . Satoshi used Thunderbird, which writes the computer's local time zone into each email's Date header and encodes a timestamp from the same computer clock in the Message-ID. I found no prior publication of these combined checks or the Gavin control. The PDF time zones, British spelling and some first-release timestamps were already known. 2. The "Belgian" clue is a red herring The "Belgian clue" is one of the most-cited arguments that Len Sassaman was involved in Bitcoin. It goes like this: one of the sources Satoshi cites in the white paper is so obscure that you'd only have known about it if you were connected to the Belgian academic world, and Sassaman was doing a PhD in Belgium. I think it's a red herring, a false lead. The paper was freely available online, and the way Satoshi cited it suggests he may have used a reference list or index that was also freely available online. Like an academic paper, the Bitcoin white paper ends with a numbered list of the eight sources it cites. Most are well known: Adam Back's Hashcash, Wei Dai's b-money, and three papers by Stuart Haber and Scott Stornetta. In the early 1990s, Haber and Stornetta came up with the idea of chaining timestamped records together so that none of them can be quietly changed later. That's the core idea behind Bitcoin's blockchain. Source number 2 is the odd one out. It's a 1999 paper by three researchers at a Belgian university Henri Massias, Xavier Serret-Avila and Jean-Jacques Quisquater about building a secure timestamping service, presented at a small regional conference in Belgium. The argument, step by step: 1. The paper was presented at a small regional conference, attended mostly by researchers from Belgium and the Netherlands, rather than published in a major journal. 2. Ducrée's paper https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.10257v14 argues that an electronic copy did not appear to be available before Bitcoin's white paper. 3. If that were true, whoever wrote the white paper must have attended the conference, used a Belgian university library, or known someone who did. 4. Len Sassaman did his PhD research at KU Leuven, a Belgian university, from 2004, so the clue has been taken to point to him. What the archives show: - It was online verified . The matching errors are verifiable; the route Satoshi took to the citation is not. His entry has two mistakes that aren't in the paper itself: - He lists one author as "X.S. The NYT's timing claims need more context Part of the New York Times case against Back is about timing. It says he went quiet on the main cryptography mailing list while Satoshi was active, and only started talking about Bitcoin six weeks after Satoshi disappeared. Both would be suspicious if true, so I checked them against the list archives. The archives complicate both points: Back kept posting while Satoshi was active, and his first Bitcoin comment on the later randombit list came soon after Bitcoin first appeared there. - The original Cryptography list, at metzdowd.com. My most likely theory If I had to bet, Satoshi was one person: - probably British, or living in the UK; - working on Windows machines set to UK time; - fitting Bitcoin around a daytime job or studies: online from late afternoon into the small hours UK time, with the odd weekend or holiday morning; - building his reading list from the online literature rather than a university library; - stepping away in April 2011. He needn't be on anyone's shortlist. The shortlist is mostly people who were famous on the mailing lists, and Satoshi worked hard not to be found. Of the named candidates, Adam Back is still the most plausible single name, for four reasons: 1. He's British. 2. He's the first person Satoshi is known to have written to. 3. He invented Hashcash, which the white paper explicitly credits. 4. His 1990s computer had the same UK-time setup as Satoshi's. The NYT's linguistic matches are also real. Mail servers often record the sending IP address in the Received headers. A trustworthy sending address could help test network location, although a relay, VPN or Tor exit would not establish the sender's physical location. - Who set up the London-time build box that Gavin used in 2011. - Proper stylometry on the white paper itself against each candidate's formal writing, with a method fixed in advance. -Claude Opus 5.5 Now back to me. Summary So, Claude may have found a few unpublished leads. Its analysis of timestamps in both emails and software is consistent with Satoshi's computers using UK time. Claude also suggests that the Belgian clue, which has been used to point towards Sassaman, is likely a red herring. Back kept posting on the cryptography mailing lists while Satoshi was active, which is slightly at odds with the NYT's account. Satoshi's last emails may indicate a changing routine, and Back seems to be more of a morning person than Satoshi was. I'm not an investigative journalist just a guy with a Claude subscription , and I haven't independently confirmed these findings or their novelty. I'm also not going down a rabbit hole to confirm all this myself, because I've got other things to do this weekend. But Opus 5.5 is clearly capable of long-horizon research tasks, among its many other talents. As for my opinion on Satoshi, if I had to put money on it, I'd still side with the NYT and the Barely Sociable documentary and put it on Back being Satoshi. That said, it's noteworthy that everyone's shortlist is filled with people already famous on the mailing lists. Yet Satoshi clearly valued his anonymity. I've known many people who pursue passion projects in the evening, with no interest in gaining notoriety from them. They just do it for the love. Then again, few of them have ever made anything as historically significant as Bitcoin and kept it a secret. But the UK is a populous country. There is room for more than one libertarian cryptography genius. A passionate lurker who understood earlier work like Hashcash, Bit gold, RPOW, and b-money could conceivably have made the leap to Bitcoin, without ever becoming a familiar name in the community. It's possible Satoshi was an anonymous observer who never posted under his real name; Adam Back and Satoshi could indeed be different people. I guess the mystery of Satoshi will live on.
