California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 942, the AI Transparency Act, requiring generative-AI providers with over 1,000,000 monthly users to offer a free AI-detection tool and embed latent provenance disclosures in AI-generated content. The law, originally set for January 1, 2026, was delayed to August 2, 2026 by AB 853.
