Major tech firms are pouring billions into UK data centres, turning Britain into Europe's largest hub for AI compute capacity.
Britain’s digital infrastructure just had its biggest year ever. Businesses collectively poured more than £11 billion into UK data centres in 2025, driven almost entirely by the insatiable appetite for AI compute power.
Who’s writing the checks #
NVIDIA leads the charge with plans to invest up to £11 billion in what it calls “AI factories” across Britain. That commitment includes the deployment of up to 120,000 Blackwell Ultra GPUs, representing a historic expansion of the company’s footprint in the country. Blackwell Ultra chips are NVIDIA’s latest-generation processors designed specifically for training and running massive AI models.
Microsoft has committed $30 billion toward AI and cloud infrastructure in the UK, with roughly $15 billion earmarked for data centre capital expenditures over the coming years.
Google has also entered the picture with a £5 billion pledge to Britain’s AI sector spread over two years.
The gap between pledges and poured concrete #
Data from construction analytics firm Barbour ABI paints a more measured picture of what’s actually happening on the ground. Actual spending on UK data centre construction came in at £1.75 billion in 2024. That figure is projected to climb to £2.38 billion in 2025. Barbour ABI projects that annual data centre spending could reach £10 billion by 2029, with AI demand serving as the primary accelerant.
The government is trying to keep up #
The Starmer government has responded with a two-pronged strategy. First, an AI Growth Zones program set to launch in November 2025, designed to streamline project timelines and reduce costs for data centre developers in designated areas. Second, a £1.1 billion AI Hardware Plan scheduled for June 2026, aimed at building out local computing capabilities that don’t rely entirely on private sector generosity.
