Burnham faces Trump clash as ministers vow to 'heed' AI threat warnings… but President brands them a 'hoax'

UK ministers pledged to 'heed' warnings about AI risks as de facto deputy prime minister Louise Haigh told the TUC conference in Brighton that more international cooperation is needed to guarantee AI safety, citing researcher claims of a 10 per cent or higher chance of super-intelligent AI wiping out humans by 2030. Haigh's stance clashes with US President Donald Trump, who wrote on Truth Social that the only guardrails AI needs are a 'STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT' and compared AI risk warnings to the 'hoax' of climate change. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds told BBC Breakfast the UK is a world leader in AI safety but acknowledged much frontier technology comes from the US and China, while Andy Burnham pulled out of his own speech following the death of his father.

De facto deputy PM Louise Haigh will tell a union conference later that more international cooperation is needed to guarantee the safety of the emerging technology.

The issue has been brought into sharp focus by claims from researchers that there is a 10 per cent chance - or higher - of super-intelligent AI wiping out humans by 2030.

However, Ms Haigh's stance contrasts with that of the US president, who dismissed warnings about the risks as a 'hoax'.

At the annual TUC gathering in Brighton she will say: 'AI has enormous potential to transform our public services, make our businesses stronger and deliver new scientific breakthroughs.'

But Ms Haigh will acknowledge that ministers must 'heed the warnings of those who are at the forefront of developing this technology' and 'be ready to work with international partners' to ensure public safety and national security.

Mr Trump compared the warnings on AI to the 'hoax' about climate change

Mr Trump has argued that a 'high IQ' president is the best safeguard against AI getting out of control

Andy Burnham has pulled out of making a speech himself following the death of his father.

Mr Trump has pushed back against calls by tech leaders such as Anthropic's Dario Amodei, OpenAI's Sam Altman and SpaceXAI's Elon Musk for greater government oversight of AI.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, Mr Trump said: 'The only control or 'guardrails' that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!'

In another post he said: 'The people that say AI is going to destroy the World, and that Data Centers are bad for your neighborhood, are the same people that said, just a short time ago, that the World would be extinguished by ''Climate Change.''

'That HOAX never worked out for them, and now they're on to the next one. These people are Revolutionaries, but Revolutionaries for a Bad and Evil Cause.

'Soon you'll find out they're working for people that do not have the best interests of the United States in mind!'

Giving interviews this morning, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said he understood public concerns about AI but insisted people should have confidence in the UK's safeguards.

'We should neither be complacent nor should we be hyperbolic about this,' he told BBC Breakfast.

He said the UK was a world leader in AI safety but 'it's a difficult situation in that a lot of this technology, the frontier technology, does in the main come from the US and China'.
