The team fine-tuned the bosonai/higgs-tts-3-4b model using Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) on a corpus of over 300 hours of recordings from more than 100 speakers, targeting code-switching between Arabic and French and zero-shot voice cloning from short reference clips. The studio said earlier single-speaker experiments overfit, and that cleaning mixed-language transcripts was key to improving code-switched speech.", "body_md": "Most text-to-speech (TTS) models today can generate impressive speech in English, French, and Modern Standard Arabic. But what happens when you try generating speech in **Algerian Darija**?\n\nThe results often sound unnatural, especially when the text contains French words mixed with Arabic, something extremely common in everyday Algerian conversations.\n\nThis is one of the problems we've been working on at **[Natiq Studio](https://natiq.studio/)**.\n\nToday, I'd like to share **Natiq-dz-ARG**, an open-weight text-to-speech model developed specifically for Algerian Darija, along with some of the technical challenges we encountered while building it.\n\nAlgerian Darija has unique vocabulary, pronunciation patterns, and linguistic influences from Arabic, French, and Amazigh.\n\nOne particularly interesting challenge is **code-switching**.\n\nConsider a sentence like:\n\nسلام خويا، حبيت نسقسيك على la livraison تاع هاد produit.\n\nAn Arabic TTS model might pronounce the French words incorrectly, while a French model will struggle with the Arabic parts.\n\nFor a natural result, the model needs to handle both languages while maintaining a consistent Algerian accent, rhythm, and speaking style.\n\nThis makes Algerian speech synthesis an interesting problem from a machine-learning perspective.\n\n**Natiq-dz-ARG** is an open-weight speech synthesis model trained specifically for Algerian Darija.\n\nIt was developed and is maintained by Natiq Studio.\n\nHere are some of its main characteristics:\n\nThe aim was not simply to generate Arabic speech, but to produce speech that better reflects how Algerians communicate in everyday life.\n\nOne of the biggest challenges was getting the model to generalize across different speakers.\n\nOur earlier experiments with single-speaker data struggled with overfitting. The resulting speech tended to reproduce characteristics of the training speaker rather than generalizing well to new voices and unfamiliar sentences.\n\nTo address this, we moved toward a much larger and more diverse dataset.\n\nThe training corpus eventually grew to over **300 hours of recordings from more than 100 speakers**, helping the model learn Algerian pronunciation across different voices.\n\nAnother major challenge was transcript quality.\n\nFor example, French expressions in Algerian conversations are sometimes transcribed phonetically using Arabic letters.\n\nA word like *physicien* might be represented as *فيزيسيان*.\n\nDuring data preparation, we worked on cleaning and correcting these mixed-language transcripts to preserve French words where appropriate.\n\nThis was particularly important for improving code-switching.\n\nInstead of training a large speech model from scratch, we used **Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA)** to fine-tune the existing `bosonai/higgs-tts-3-4b` model.\n\nLoRA allows us to adapt a pretrained model by training a smaller number of additional parameters rather than updating every parameter in the original model.\n\nThis makes fine-tuning more computationally manageable while retaining useful knowledge from the foundation model.\n\nThe resulting adapter is available on Hugging Face.\n\nAnother interesting capability of Natiq-dz-ARG is zero-shot voice cloning.\n\nInstead of training a separate model for every voice, the model can use a short reference audio recording to guide speech generation.\n\nThe inference process accepts:\n\nThe model then generates speech conditioned on the reference voice.\n\nThis feature is useful for experimenting with speaker adaptation and studying how different voices affect speech synthesis.\n\nOf course, reference voices should only be used with appropriate consent and permission.\n\nNatiq-dz-ARG is available for developers and researchers who want to experiment with Algerian speech generation.\n\n**Model weights and documentation:**\n\n[https://huggingface.co/Natiq-Studio/Natiq-dz-ARG](https://huggingface.co/Natiq-Studio/Natiq-dz-ARG)\n\n**Interactive demo:**\n\n[https://huggingface.co/spaces/abdelhak-k/Natiq-dz-ARG](https://huggingface.co/spaces/abdelhak-k/Natiq-dz-ARG)\n\nThe Hugging Face repository includes Python inference instructions, reference audio examples, and information about the model's architecture.\n\nDevelopers can run the model locally using a compatible CUDA GPU. The published instructions recommend at least 16 GB of VRAM.\n\nThe adapter is distributed under **CC BY-NC 4.0**, allowing non-commercial use under the license terms. Commercial use requires appropriate licensing, including compliance with the underlying foundation model's license.\n\nAlongside the open-weight model, we're also developing **[Natiq Studio](https://natiq.studio/)**, a platform for generating Algerian Darija voiceovers without needing to configure or host a machine-learning model.\n\nThe platform is designed for creators, businesses, and developers who need Algerian speech generation for practical applications.\n\nIt currently offers:\n\nThe hosted platform is a separate service from the downloadable Natiq-dz-ARG model and does not currently offer user-uploaded voice cloning.\n\nFor developers who don't want to manage GPU inference themselves, Natiq Studio provides a REST API.\n\nFor example, you can request speech generation using a simple HTTP request:\n\n```\ncurl -X POST https://natiq.studio/api/v1/speech \\\n  -H \"Authorization: Bearer $NATIQ_KEY\" \\\n  -H \"Content-Type: application/json\" \\\n  -d '{\n    \"text\": \"سلام عليكم خاوتي، واش راكم اليوم؟\",\n    \"voice\": \"leila\"\n  }'\n```\n\nThe API returns a speech job that can be retrieved when processing is complete.\n\nAvailable voices can be retrieved through the `/voices` endpoint.\n\nAPI keys should be stored securely on the server rather than exposed in frontend JavaScript.\n\nThe full documentation is available here:\n\n[https://natiq.studio/api/docs/](https://natiq.studio/api/docs/)\n\nThis makes it possible to integrate Algerian Darija speech generation into websites, mobile applications, content-production workflows, and other services.\n\nAlgerian Darija is still underrepresented in speech AI.\n\nWe hope that making models like Natiq-dz-ARG accessible to researchers and developers will encourage more work on Algerian speech technology.\n\nThere's still plenty of room for improvement, particularly in regional accent coverage, pronunciation consistency, and mixed-language text handling.\n\nFor anyone interested in the project:\n\nI'd love to hear feedback from other developers working on speech synthesis, Arabic NLP, or low-resource languages.\n\n**Have you experimented with text-to-speech for dialects or languages that aren't well supported by mainstream AI models? What challenges did you encounter?**", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/building-ai-speech-for-algerian-darija-introducing-natiq-dz-arg", "canonical_source": "https://dev.to/abdelhakk/building-ai-speech-for-algerian-darija-introducing-natiq-dz-arg-4h11", "published_at": "2026-10-28 16:58:36+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-10-28 17:11:34.650689+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "machine-learning", "natural-language-processing", "ai-research", "ai-tools"], "entities": ["Natiq Studio", "Natiq-dz-ARG", "Hugging Face", "bosonai/higgs-tts-3-4b", "Low-Rank Adaptation"], "also_reported_by": [], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/building-ai-speech-for-algerian-darija-introducing-natiq-dz-arg", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/building-ai-speech-for-algerian-darija-introducing-natiq-dz-arg.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/building-ai-speech-for-algerian-darija-introducing-natiq-dz-arg.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/building-ai-speech-for-algerian-darija-introducing-natiq-dz-arg.jsonld"}}
