Build an AI tennis scout that shows where every fact came from A developer built an AI tennis scouting tool that pairs two Apify Actors—a Flashscore match lookup and a player match-history scraper—with a language model to select evidence, then renders each claim with source match links, a cutoff timestamp and a repeatable calculation. The pipeline copies only pre-match rating fields from the target match, excludes the target result and any match ending after the target's start time, and surfaces data asymmetries (such as missing eligible prior matches for one player) rather than filling gaps with guesses. The illustrated Sinner–Zverev Wimbledon 2026 report is described as a historical reconstruction, not an archived pre-final prediction. A useful tennis scout should be able to answer a follow-up: “Which matches support that statement?” If the answer is another paragraph of confident prose, the scout is difficult to trust. If the answer is four match links, a cutoff timestamp and a calculation you can repeat, you have something you can put in front of a reader. This project combines two Actors and a language model. The match lookup provides the target and its stored pre-match ratings. Player history provides earlier results. Python turns them into a small evidence ledger. AI chooses the most useful entries, and a deterministic renderer prints those facts with their source links. Disclosure: I maintain the CrawlPlant Actors used here. The illustrated report is a historical reconstruction for Sinner–Zverev at Wimbledon 2026. It is not an archived prediction published before the final. The illustrated evidence selection is editorial; a paid model call was not used to generate this exported example. The source export contains five Sinner matches. One is the target final, so it cannot count as prior form. Four earlier completed matches remain. It contains no eligible prior Zverev matches. That asymmetry belongs on the card. Calling the result “Sinner's last ten” or filling Zverev's side with a guessed recent record would make the presentation neater and the report worse. Install apify-client and set APIFY TOKEN . This helper checks run success and reads the complete returned dataset rather than just its first page. Actor calls can incur charges; use run spending limits and start with a known match. python import os import json import math from pathlib import Path from datetime import datetime from urllib.request import Request, urlopen def call actor slug, run input : from apify client import ApifyClient client = ApifyClient os.environ "APIFY TOKEN" run = client.actor f"crawlplant/{slug}" .call run input=run input if not run or run "status" = "SUCCEEDED": raise RuntimeError f"Actor did not succeed: {run and run 'status' }" rows = list client.dataset run "defaultDatasetId" .iterate items if len rows = run input "maxItems" : raise RuntimeError "Result reached maxItems; narrow the range or increase the cap before claiming completeness." return rows target rows = call actor "flashscore-tennis", { "mode": "matchIds", "matchIds": "n5DWLXD5" , "includeOdds": False, "includeH2H": False, "maxItems": 10, } if len target rows = 1 or target rows 0 .get "matchId" = "n5DWLXD5": raise ValueError "Expected the selected target match" target = target rows 0 history = for side in "player1", "player2" : history.extend call actor "tennis-match-history", { "playerUrls": target side "url" , "status": "finished", "maxItems": 2000, } For a forward-looking version, select an actually scheduled match from flashscore-tennis , then use the same player URLs. If a player has no resolved ID or URL, stop and resolve their identity first. A display name should not silently merge two careers. The next function copies only pre-match rating fields from the target. It does not send the target's winner, score, duration or in-match statistics to the model. A prior result is eligible only if its recorded end time is strictly before the target's start. python def scout evidence target, history : cutoff = datetime.fromisoformat target "startTime" .replace "Z", "+00:00" if cutoff.tzinfo is None: raise ValueError "The target start must have a timezone" facts, limits = , match id = target "matchId" url = target.get "url" or f"https://www.flashscore.com/match/{match id}/" for side in "player1", "player2" : player id = target side "playerId" name = target f"{side}Name" for field, label in f"{side}Elo", "overall Elo before this match" , : value = target.get field if value is not None: facts.append {"id": f"{side}-elo", "text": f"{name}: {value} {label}.", "sources": {"matchId": match id, "url": url, "field": field} } surface elo = target.get "elo" or {} .get f"{side}Surface" if surface elo is not None: facts.append {"id": f"{side}-surface", "text": f"{name}: {surface elo} surface Elo before this match.", "sources": {"matchId": match id, "url": url, "field": f"elo.{side}Surface"} } prior = {} for row in history: if row.get "matchId" == match id or row.get "status" = "finished" or not row.get "endTime" : continue ended = datetime.fromisoformat row "endTime" .replace "Z", "+00:00" if ended.tzinfo is None or ended = cutoff: continue found = next s for s in "player1", "player2" if row.get s or {} .get "playerId" == player id , None if found and row.get "winner" in "player1", "player2" : prior row "matchId" = ended, row, found recent = sorted prior.values , key=lambda item: item 0 , reverse=True :10 if recent: wins = sum row "winner" == found for , row, found in recent facts.append {"id": f"{side}-available-form", "text": f"{name}: {wins} wins from {len recent } available completed prior matches in this export.", "sources": {"matchId": row "matchId" , "url": row.get "url" or f"https://www.flashscore.com/match/{row 'matchId' }/", "field": "winner, endTime, playerId"} for , row, in recent } for , row, found in recent: outcome = "won" if row "winner" == found else "lost" facts.append {"id": f"prior-{row 'matchId' }-{side}", "text": f"{name} {outcome} the {row.get 'date' } match at {row.get 'tournament' } {row.get 'score' } .", "sources": {"matchId": row "matchId" , "url": row.get "url" or f"https://www.flashscore.com/match/{row 'matchId' }/", "field": "winner, score, date, tournament"} } else: limits.append f"No eligible prior completed matches for {name} in the supplied export." limits.append "This export is a limited sample, not a verified complete last-ten or career history." limits.append "Historical reconstruction retrieved after the event, not an archived pre-match prediction." return {"matchId": match id, "title": f"{target 'player1Name' } vs {target 'player2Name' }", "cutoff": target "startTime" , "facts": facts, "limitations": limits} evidence = scout evidence target, history print json.dumps evidence, indent=2 The historical export was retrieved after the event. Excluding outcome fields prevents a simple leak through the prompt; it does not turn reconstructed historical ratings into an archived forecast. Corrections may have changed the source since the match took place. This example uses the OpenAI Responses API with a JSON schema. Schema compliance controls structure; it does not certify that a source fact is correct or that the selected facts are representative. The code checks selected IDs, and the full ledger remains available for review. This design intentionally produces a compact factual brief. A later prose layer could explain it more conversationally, but would require a separate factuality review. We do not measure that capability by claiming that a JSON schema eliminates hallucinations. This curated session shows a new Flashscore Tennis lookup, retrieval of an existing Match History export, and the validation of three source-linked facts. The original Polish messages have been translated into English, and tool calls are abbreviated. The coding assistant selected the facts; no separate model API was called. The scout can hand a prior matchId to Tennis Point-by-Point https://apify.com/crawlplant/tennis-point-by-point to illustrate a past match's pressure games. For a pre-match brief, those points must come from a match that ended before the target start. Points from the target itself belong in a post-match report. The synergy is practical: Flashscore Tennis https://apify.com/crawlplant/flashscore-tennis identifies the event and ratings; Tennis Match History https://apify.com/crawlplant/tennis-match-history supplies inspectable prior results; AI makes a small editorial choice; the final report keeps the links. None of those steps needs to pretend it knows why the next match will be won.
