For those that were intrigued by the recent launch of the AMD Ryzen AI Halo developer platform with a very capable mini PC but looking for something more affordable and not needing quite as much horsepower or AI focus, BOSGAME recently launched their VTA-439 mini PC. The BOSGAME VTA-439 is powered by the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 with Radeon 890M graphics for those wanting still quite a capable mini PC that retails for around $1,049 USD while sporting 32GB of RAM and 1TB NVMe SSD storage. The past few weeks I have been testing out the BOSGAME VTA-439 as a mini PC and also my first time trying out any Ryzen AI 400 series hardware compared to all the Ryzen AI 300 series testing over the past two years at Phoronix. While still based on AMD Zen 5 CPU cores and RDNA 3.5 graphics, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 brings a +200MHz clock speed boost over the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 with now topping out at 5.2GHz. There is also a similar 200MHz bump to the GPU turbo clock speed with the Radeon 890M integrated graphics of the HX 470. If you care about the Ryzen AI NPU, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 NPU is capable of 55 TOPS compared to 50 TOPS in the HX 370. This Gorgon Point SoC still has 12 Zen 5 cores / 24 threads like the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 Strix Point.
The BOSGAME VTA-439 features the Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 paired with 32GB of DDR5-5600 system memory and a 1TB Kingston NVMe SSD. It's not nearly as powerful as AMD Ryzen AI Max+ "Strix Halo" like with the Ryzen AI Halo, but it costs just about a quarter of the price at just $1,049 USD.
The DDR5-5600 RAM are replaceable SO-DIMMs in a dual slot configuration so they are upgradeable. There is also room for a total of three M.2 slots for making quite a bit of storage potential.
Also making the BOSGAME VTA-439 interesting is having dual 2.5G Ethernet ports plus WiFi 7 support via the RZ717 chipset.
Front panel I/O ports on the VTA-439 mini PC include one USB4 port capable of 8K DP output at 60Hz, 100W power delivery support and two USB 3.2 Gen2 ports. On the rear are the dual 2.5G Ethernet ports, DisplayPort 1.4 output with 4K@144Hz support, HDMI with 4K@144Hz support, and audio jacks. Quite nice connectivity out of this little PC.
The BOSGAME VTA-439 arrived with Microsoft Windows 11 pre-loaded but Linux worked out on it just fine. BOSGAME supplied this review sample to Phoronix knowing full well that Linux hardware testing would be happening. I will have some Windows vs. Linux benchmarks on this Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 mini PC soon while today's article is just looking at the performance on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.
Running Ubuntu 26.04 LTS on the BOSGAME VTA-439 was uneventful. Given that the Ryzen AI 400 series are just an evolution of the Ryzen AI 300 series, there were no big surprises on the platform side. This mini PC was working out well without any troubles and the likes of wired Ethernet and the WiFi were all working on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS with the Linux 7.0 kernel.
